New TV Show- Nurse Nation on MTV

Have y'all heard about the new TV show MTV is working on titled 'Nurse Nation'!? I don't have the quote from Entertainment Weekly, but it reads something like "a docuseries thay follows 9 young hard-partying travel nurses as they explore a new city for 13 weeks."

The premiere date has yet to be announced, but MTV has greenlit the show and others to replace the hole that Jersey Shore is leaving in their network. What are your thoughts? Excited to watch it or annoyed at how they may portray travel RNs?

Obviously the show producers decided no one would watch boring people. Selecting drama queens for cast members makes sense to me!

Yeah. I know no one would want to watch my life because it would be "lame". But this show is giving nurses a bad rap.

Specializes in OB.

It is very sad to see that people that chose this profession (because it is a profession not a temporary job) and they chose it voluntarily, feel like the only way to get through a hard/bad/busy day at work is by getting wasted. I was not saint when I was that age, but I also did not have people's lives depending on me. And I certainly did not talk with my hands in anyone's face either.

This is a comment from someone on the MTV Facebook page: "I don't see the problem with show it's great. It is just showing what normal nurses do outside of work they don't act like that when their at work so I don't see the problem. I'm sure if they followed around doctors, lawyers, surgeons, ect... it would be the same thing. We are all human and have to be young at one point..just because we have careers doesn't mean we can't have fun and act like boring old ppl." Just.. Wow.[/quote']

I completely agree with the person you quoted. Are you honestly telling me that you don't know anyone at your hospital that goes out and does those things????? Why does it matter if they are nurses? Their party life and their work life are completely separate and one does not need to dictate the other.

How can you agree with him when he is lumping all nurses into that category?

And I don't work at a hospital, so no. Plus we work 12s. So if they have the energy to go out & party. God bless their souls.

The agency who provided travel nurses to Orange County. CA issued a Press Release in response to backlash from nurses . . .an excerpt is below. Spew Alert: they want to help alleviate the nursing shortage.

"Through the Scrubbing In participation Aya Health intends to create a greater awareness about the heroic work nurses do every day. According to the Bureau of Labor Statics (sic) the United States is experiencing a nursing shortage that is only expected to worsen. . "

To summarize the next point, they hope to inspire young people to choose a nursing career with their show.

Anyway, I came across this contact info for Aya Health executives should anyone be interested.

How did those two nurses get hired without license and arrest records? Credentialing and compliance is up my butt everyday to make sure everything is in order

That's exactly what I was wondering....I can't even submit to an assignment without an active license....it wasn't just one...it was TWO nurses without an active CA license!

He's not lumping anyone. He just called them "normal nurses." I don't find that insulting. Nor do I feel categorized. Would you feel better if he said "abnormal nurses?"

No. I would feel better if he just referred to the nurses in the show. Not every nurse goes out, gets wildly drunk, strips down naked & dry humps every half naked guy in sight. :-/

Those nursing supervisors were NO NONSENSE with them.....it made me laugh. Especially that guy from Louisiana and that other girl.

While I am not THRILLED about this show....and I won't be watching (I watched to make an educated decision) I was very young when I started nursing in a fast paced critical care and ED environment.

I recently did a cute thing on FB adding up dollar amounts.......I have to admit...I've had a lot of fun.....:lol2:.

I'm just glad no one was there to tape it......;).

I agree. Funny how all the other posts about this show have disappeared?

I noticed that too. I recall seeing one a month before the show aired.

I am upset about this show and it's portrayal of nurses and traveling nursing. It makes us look like we are unprofessional nit-wits that get drunk all the time and just party. I agree that nurses are entitled to their personal lives and to live it up outside of work. I love hanging with my friend, drinking adult bevies, etc HOWEVER, I would never do something that would tarnish my reputation as a RN or the reputation of fellow nurses. If you think this show doesn't influence the view of nursing, look at Twitter. Young adults, nursing student, and teenagers are proclaiming they can wait to become a nurse and live this false lie of what MTV is giving them. They believe what they see. They think is glamours and fun. It is bringing the wrong type of people to the field of nursing. Our only saving grace is, nursing school will weed out the individuals that are entering this profession for the wrong reasons. But then again, these people on Scrubbing in apparently have license.
