Hello Ladies and Gents!,

Havent posted in a while...I think i may have posted many moons ago regarding relocating from NY to TX...but ...it wasnt as specific as this thread i will post...I may sound like many other "relocating" posts but here it goes!...lol..bear with me!..I am an LPN now..god willing i will be graduating with my RN (ADN) degree in May of 2010...the hubby begins his RN program in January of 2010...this will take him 2 yrs (god willing) to accomplish...now this is our "plan"...we have been on the issue of relocating back and forth now for a couple of years as far as where we want to "settle"...NY for the most part i love..i love the four changes of the seasons and i love the suburban areas about 30-45 outside the new york city...far enough away from the hustle and bustle yet close enough to get a decent salary..now we've looked at some homes in tx and of course they are gorgeous and seem very affordable...here in new york they are pretty expensive...400k if you want a decent colonial or even a raised ranch up here...taxes are a killer...we have a 6 yr old son and do plan to expand our family...now this is it...we do plan on putting down a very nice down payment on a 350k- 400k (or less) on a home (in tx if we do decide to move in about a couple yrs (more so three)..we are an interracial couple...my husband is from the islands (jamaican) and i am hispanic american...we would love to buy a nice home in the suburbs where it is commutable to a city or where pay for an RN is acceptable...in NY a new grad RN starts at 72k-74k/yr thats a typical 3 12hr shift..i know it is ALOT lower for TX...though i have heard that you may get paid close to 30..i do not plan on working in hospitals forever...my husband and i are pretty open to LTC, Hospitals, etc..actually hubby prefers ER or ICU...sorry for the loooong post but can anyone suggest which city is "interracial friendly?"...great schools (good football..lol for my lil one who plays), and where the pay can be as close to perhaps 28-30/hr?...also where the four seasons can still be seen...i know it will not be as harsh as it is up north but its still nice to feel a cool breeze and where i may wear my jeans and my boots..:heartbeat...we were looking @ the Austin Area...any other suggestions will be GREATLY APPRECIATED:heartbeat...thank you so much!

To me, Austin is interracial friendly. Do you or hubby have family or friends in the geographic area? That really smoothes transitions.

Hispanic culture is so much a part of Austin. Although I am not Hispanic, I am in love with the culture.

We are having cool breezes today. Did you send them our way? Gracias!

lol...No we dont have any family out there...but we would not mind the travel around the holidays back to new york or have family come out to visit us...its really about what makes us happy...i was looking into the Austin, forth worth areas...austin is very nice as far as what we see...forth worth the houses seem jus as big as the ones in austin yet a lil cheaper and i see they are closer to the Dallas area...thanks for the reply im looking forward to hear from other nurses in these areas...thank you so much!

I'm a single 28 year old black female who has been living in Fort Worth for the past 4 years. I am originally from California.

While Austin is interracially friendly, the healthcare facilities are probably not going to pay you what you are worth. Austin is known for a high cost of living (Texas standards) with lower than average pay rates. A new RN would start at about $21 to $22 hourly.

I have heard that Houston is racially tolerant and pays very competitively.

As far as real estate is concerned, the property taxes are outrageous in many parts of Texas. I pay $2600 yearly for a 1,900 square foot house that was built in 2004 and valued at $105,000. My acquaintance lives in Red Oak, which is a suburb of south Dallas, and pays a property tax rate of $5,100 yearly for her 3,000 square foot house that was built in 2008 and valued at $210,000. Most of my friends and acquaintances who live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area pay about $3,000 yearly in property taxes.

Some cities in the DFW area to consider would be Fort Worth, Arlington, Dallas, Grand Prairie, and Cedar Hill. Stay away from the small towns that are not located inside either Dallas or Tarrant County.

Thanx commuter...would you have knowledge of what to expect as far as pay in nursing homes, hospitals for an RN in your area?...I was told Texas pays cloe to 30/hr depending where you love and and how many years of experience you have...3,000/yr for property taxes to me sounds awesome!..lol...then again im from NY...where i live the property taxes are currently going for 15 to 32,000 a year!!...its aweful...that said if i move further north into other counties im looking at 4-10k a year....its gettn bad up here..thank you so much for your response...:heartbeat

A brand new RN with no experience would start at $21.50 to $25 hourly in most DFW area hospitals. If you start your career at the local nursing homes, the pay for a new RN ranges between $25 and $30 hourly.

With all due respect, Plano, Wylie, Allen, and McKinney are great places to live as well, since property taxes aren't an issue with you!!;) Low crime, beautiful homes, and minutes away from downtown Dallas. Excellent rail service available!! Great shopping and excellent school systems as well!!:yeah: My advice, visit extensively before moving!!

lol..thank you purplelvn...i did see homes in that area also...i will plan to take a trip down there in the near future to see how things are...i thank you all for the responses..as far as property tax...it can be an issue if it goes over 7k a year!...lol...but 3k/yr average is really nice...i wish i had that up here in new york...god willing if all else falls through i will be an RN this spring 2010 and the hubby winter 2011...two RN incomes i think is comfortable in texas right?...lol..thanks ladies..greatly appreciated

NYSNOWBUNNY,

You might want to consider Houston - we are the most diverse city in Texas. This is undoubtedly due to our size and economic base. Inter-anything couples don't even rate a second glance as long as the both appear to be human... LOL. We have the largest 'China town' in the US (surprise!), the largest Nigerian community in the US (petrochemical connection), a huge Indian/Pakistani population - and so on. My neighborhood has such a large Korean population that our street signs are in English/Korean. It's great! Bottom line - there is just no ethnic 'stuff' (food, clothes, etc) that you can't find in H-town.

As for the whole "4 seasons" thing.... I think it's really over-rated. :D North Texas gets a 'real' winter complete with blizzards & ice storms - no thanks. If we get an urge to tromp around in knee deep snow, that's why God created Colorado -- and why it's full of Texans each winter.

Good luck on your relocation plan!

Hello Houston TX. Would you share your knowledge of hospital's and the pay level? I went for a visit in Houston and fell in love with all that is offered there. Commute is my only concern, getting stuck in traffic is no fun! Small price to pay for a great lifestyle.:coollook:

The Texas Med Center will pay you at least that and is VERY ethinically diverse. I keep reading on here that Houston pays the best out of the US **for the cost of living***.

i'm just curious. are there a lot of nursing jobs in houston, whether its in the hosital or nursing home? i tried to search for jobs in houston online but i'm not finding lot of jobs. so i thought i should just ask.
