Vent- Sending students to Health room minutes before dismissed to home

Yesterday I stayed one hour extra at work because I had 10 kids come to the health room at the end of the school day.

This bugs me to no end. I don't blame my sweet elementary school students I blame their teachers.

-One student had a suspected case of ringworm...

-4 students came in feeling ill. No one had a temp so I sent them back to class to get ready to go home. I told them all to tell their parents when they get home.

-Since PE is at the end of the school day I have a ton of students come in for unwarranted ice packs

and the list goes on....

That is my vent for today. Enjoying my day off today and back to work tomorrow.

This is a HUGE complaint for me too... Sending a student to the clinic 10 minutes before the end of the day really leaves me very little wiggle room as far as contacting people and what not... UGH

For the child with suspected ringworm. I didn't even have time to send home an exclusion form. I called mom to let her know our policy and that was it! I didn't want the child to be late for the bus so I couldn't fill out the necessary paperwork. This gets annoying after a while.

Oh my gosh, I thought I was the only one.....4 cases of suspected lice 20 minutes before school gets out?

I'm not in school nursing but shouldn't this be something you could present to your management with specifics to address with the teachers. Their short notice sets you up for errors and you will be thrown under those busses' wheels when parents, mgt and lawyers get done with you. The liability and litigation risks are among reasons why I would ever go into your field. God love you! I'm guessing that you already ran these interventions but it seems to me that the teachers need to be brought up to speed and soon.

I've had this happening a lot lately! I'm like if they've made it all day they can make it another 15 min with a headache or stomachache. It's also tough esp with the ice packs because all of a sudden you have all these kids to chart on to prove they weren't falling apart as they left the school! GRRR!

I think a lot of those visits are about the teacher covering their *** . The kid has been asking to go to the nurse almost all day and teacher doesnt want the kid to tell mom she wouldn't let him go. It really irks me when the kid stays in after school programs. It leaves me so liitle time to get in touch with a parent and get them picked up in a timely manner if they have a temp or something. And the other stuff...... Chapped lips when mom is probably already in the parking lot! Do only nurses have common sense?

Okay, this could be my naivete talking, as I am not a school nurse, but is it possible these kids are coming in on their own accord after they've been dismissed from class? Maybe they didn't want to miss any class, and think you would take better care of it than their mothers would. :D

This is not the case. They are coming in with their teacher or come with a note from their teacher...

Another thing we need to do is stop having our diabetics get their last FS ten minutes before school is dismissed. They need to come to the health room at least 20 minutes prior to dismissal. Today both my diabetics had a FS that required intervention. It left me with only 10 minutes to attempt to fix them, then I always have to stay late charting on them.

Next time I work at that school, I'm calling them down a little earlier.

Yes, I believe "CYA" is EXACTLY why we get sore throats at dismissal time. As long as they've sent them to the nurse, the teacher can wash their hands and be done with it. It's the nurse's problem now.
