Thoughts on the "doctor's stethoscope"

I know there are other threads, but I was wondering what my fellow school nurses thought of this topic that has been blowing up my Facebook newsfeed.

On my page, I wrote:

"I can't think of a day in nursing that I DIDN'T use my stethoscope.

As the school nurse, there's no doctor on call and no other medical professional in the building. I have an obligation to the parents of an asthmatic child or a student having an allergic reaction to rely on my education to make the call of how to treat in my office or decide if an ER visit is necessary.

Hopefully, this will bring some light to those who don't understand the importance of the nurse's assessment."

Can't tell you how many times I have to hide my "Doctor's Stethoscopeâ„¢" from EMT's and Paramedics when they realize I have a Littmann around my neck. I remember once in nursing school a physician tried to borrow it and before I could open my mouth to say yes, the nurse I was working with pushed me aside and said: "No. You have one around your neck." She later told me no offense, don't ever let anyone borrow your stethoscope especially doctors. If you on your nursing school budget can afford that, he can too.

i have always thought that the "view" on "the view" the few times i've bothered to watch it, has been very ignorant.

that being said... I can't tell you how many of my students think i'm a doctor anyhow ( and parents too - i have a canned speech explaining that i'm a nurse not a doctor - estoy una enfermeria, no una doctora (when i need it for my LA population)) so it wouldn't phase them for me to have a "doctor's anything"

What about a doctor's salary, Flare?

I don't watch The View. Or Miss America.

I have a Littman. I have 2, actually.

A comment that seemed to be made because of the moment. Trying to be funny without thought to what is said. She has no idea how many times nurses use stethoscopes in a shift.

I'm just thankful there's no doctor around to steal my "doctor's stethoscope."

Joy Behar sounded so ignorant. There is now video of these people backtracking and saying how much they love and respect nurses. It sounds awkward and forced. So, incredibly stupid. Of course none of them know that the stethoscope is practically the first equipment they teach us in nursing school, etc.
