Do you guys typically call Doctor's offices and request shot records if the updated form isn't showing in your state's database and mom will not bring it in?

i won't contact the doctor's office. They're lucky that i am nice enough to (and have access to) check the database (as not all school nurses do - they all CAN - it's a matter of getting access).

No. Doctor's offices can't legally release that information either.

The kiddo stays home until parent provides proof. Funny how quickly parents get vacc records in when they have to pay for a babysitter.

We're a special needs charter that also provides PT, OT, and Speech so we do have forms where all parents sign off on medical releases to the school. So technically I can call and request the info and have a release to do so, I just feel like parents should have responsibility at some point. Especially stuff like this. If they were in a typical school they would.

I probably put more effort into it than I should. That likely stems from me having 5 kids and knowing how indifferent and disinterested the pediatric offices are in providing such information to the parents.

This is what my letter says, but nicely of course. Still have some that send the kids in, with no records, and then won't pick the kids up and admin says for me to call the doctor. :banghead:

Yes I do. If I request several times from parents, and they do not bring it, then I call. Physicians offices are allowed to give out immunization data to schools. We have a pretty good relationship with most pediatricians around here. Actually, I get calls from doctors offices asking me to fax them a child's immunization records sometimes. Especially if they are new to a doc and they moved from somewhere else, they need the record to enroll in school.

Actually, they can. Many are still reluctant to, though. 517-Does HIPAA allow a health care provider to disclose PHI about a student to a school nurse | HHS.gov

I don't contact MD offices. It is the parents' responsibility to provide that information. I do usually check our state immunization registry, or try to contact the nurse at their previous school, though. I am hoping to have access to the immunization registry again before the start of school, but am not optimistic about it.

I wish we had a registry...

It can be very helpful but it's only as accurate as the information entered by the providers. We have a local Pediatric group, large practice, that doesn't participate in the program so all of those kid's immunizations don't get into the record; definitely mucks up the program.
