Then put them out of school.

It's amazing how quickly the records are produced!

That's how I think it should go, but having a hard time with administration backing me. They want me to call their doctor's and ask for the records. I give a 30-day notice letter, one letter each week thereafter and then a phone call the week of expiration. And I STILL have to chase after the records for some kids. I wish they would just enforce the rule.

I'm not allowed to contact the doctor without the parent's signed permission.

Our district does what Far mentioned, no shots=no school.

Depends on the relationship with the dr.'s office. I'm in a small town so we have good relationships with dr. offices. One of the quickest ways I have used to get a delinquent shot record is to not allow them in school. I have even pulled student out of class and had them in my office until mom either brought the shot record or picked up student. I don't have to do that often now with the new 12 year old shots required.

This is what my letter says, but nicely of course. Still have some that send the kids in, with no records, and then won't pick the kids up and admin says for me to call the doctor. :banghead:

The docs don't have to release a minor's record to the school unless they have permission from the parents.

Yep - No record/Exemption form = no school. I never contact doctor's offices - that is parents responsibility. What state are you in? Check your state requirements - I always mention our Texas "Law" regrading immunizations and provide parents a copy/link to the info, most of the time that gets me what I need. If not, I let my principal know and he makes the phone call to have the parent pick up the student and the student is marked unexcused absence until we get the proper documentation.

I know it is difficult when admin doesn't really back you up. My principal was the same up until a few years ago when finally it came from above him that we need to be compliant with the immunizations - the district doesn't want to be on the evening news for noncompliance if we ever have a breakout of Pertussis, Measles etc.

I have always contacted the parents because it is their responsibility. I had a nurse from a school call me in regards to a student with incorrect shot records from 2011 and she wanted to know which one was the correct one. The facility then started using epic charting and all the old records didn't transfer over. I informed her that the student hasn't been to our office in almost 6 years and we no longer have his records on file.

As with many others, if they come in and don't have their shot records (or if I can't access in in the state database), they can't start.
