Head lice is NOT an emergency. I repeat- NOT. AN. EMERGENCY.

Please carry on.

*breathes into paper bag* This, right here, is why AS GOD AS MY WITNESS, I SHALL NEVER BE A SCHOOL NURSE. Lawd. You all have nerves of steel. Lice sends me into a screeching frenzy. Nope, nope, and nope-er. Bless you all, I commend you. I'll stay in OB, thanks. *shudder*

When my best friend was in labor, I observed the worse case of head lice that I had ever seen! 2 little kids(probably 5&7ish) in the OB waiting room. I could see the lice crawling from a distance and when they all left the waiting room to go see the patient, there were live lice on the couch they had been laying on. I was not yet a school nurse, so I did not collect the little buggers in a ziploc bag for scientific study, bummer I know

Thanks for this thread. It is just what I needed. I sure have missed you all!! We are quite a bunch, but we all giggle and appreciate every one of these responses!!

I have been sick and also my grandbaby has been in the hospital. It wasn't a very fun week last week. Poor baby and his mama, had to learn to sleep through his cough and mine too!! :woot:

Lol. Just the thought of head lice used to make me itchy for days! When I was in HS my nurse's aid classroom had a poster of a giant magnified louse, I stood on my desk and turned it around because I couldn't stand to look at it for another second! Now I put the real deal in baggies and pin them to the bulletin board:up:

Not to bust your bubble, but our little old critters don't just like the school age kiddos :) I'm willing to bet that at some point, a ready to deliver momma has graced your doors carrying in with her those little buggers :wideyed: (I hope you know I'm just giving ya a hard time :) )

(I always wanted to be an OB nurse, FYI. It was the whole reason I went to nursing school. Just never got the chance to work on that floor!)

So I had a parent that I am friendly with, actually have known since before I became a SN, call me because she took her kiddo to the doc and the doc diagnosed lice and gave them an RX. Mom called me on the way home in a panic. It took me forever to talk her off the ledge. But eventually we got through it. Kiddo was treated. No further word from the lice battlefield. So then I see her at a party where she proceeded to go on and on about it. About how freaked out and how upsetting and so on...:nono:

I have only had one episode in 2 years. Though there was a little freaking on the teacher front (most of those infested were staff kids), overall the parents were cool. They listened to my advice and quite a few tell me they lice comb their kids weekly to catch it early (none noticed). I would so remind the dramatic that their child could have a chronic condition or childhood cancer to keep it in perspective.

I'm pretty sure I would be fired if I tried to put a little louse in a baggie for science. Or they would all come with the pitchforks to remove me lol
