But I'm the Nurse

Maybe I am just grumpy today but...

Kid comes in saying they got hit in the eye with a pogo stick (while repeatedly poking herself in the eye to show me how) and the gym teacher told her to come get an ice pack.

No redness, swelling, bruising, can see fine. I let her know she was okay and didn't need an ice pack.

"But it hurts!"

"Then stop poking it!"

"But Ms. So-and-so said to give me an ice pack!"

"But I'm the nurse."

UGH!!! I hate with the teacher or lunch room monitor tells the kid that they need something, or need to go home. Why am I here if I cannot do my assessment.

Trust me, if this is how it's gonna go today, I'll take my broken ankle back home and go to bed. Y'all can handle it. Peace.

(Told you I was grumpy-admins, DO NOT put this on facebook please)

OOOh it makes me crazy when they come in already diagnosed by the teacher in the classroom! I think we should send them back saying the nurse said to give me a 100 on the test.

I had a teacher tell me that a kid looks like he needs to go home. No, a kid only needs to go home if their throwing up, have a fever, or having diarrhea. None of which you say in that classroom. It may be beneficial if they go home, but he didn't need to go home. And hey, I didn't actually send the kid home.

I'm curious about the Facebook comment... Are these threads posted there?

I hope your day gets better SullyRN! (I'm grumpy today also.)

I actually love the teacher that did this today. I saw her and told her why I didn't give the student an icepack, she said "Oh, I know, she was poking it in class and wouldn't stop so I sent her up just to appease her."

But, all that is doing is showing the kid "Hey, if I whine enough-I get my way."

Homie don't play that.

I love the ones that come to the clinic with backpack and coats on, with a note from teacher "they are sick and need to go home". Well....HELLO !! What the Heck am I here for ?? So frustrating. Ugh....Teachers !!

Yes, I've seen many Allnurses threads post up on Facebook, even some from the school nurse forum. I just wanted to vent a little but I don't want it on Facebook where I feel it might be easier to identify me. (Does that make me sound crazy?)

YES!!! Our secretary finally called the teachers and told them they couldn't do this, that the nurse had to have a legit reason to send them home and be the one to make the call or it wasn't excused. Love her.

A teacher tried to get me to send home a student because he was a major distraction to classroom because he "got bed bug bites" and is insistent it itches so badly. -_-

I have one teacher that will pack the kids up, walk them to my office then tell me she had already called the parents to come pick them up. But she wants me to check them out anyway?!? She will also write down what she wants ME to tell the parent regarding the kids "illness". I usually just let the parent know, if they ask, that the teacher made the call before an assessment was done on their child.

I would have the teacher keep the "sick" student with her. She played the nurse, so she needs to assume that responsibility.

I had this happen once, the mom came in my office demanding her child's temp be taken because he had been sent home several times for a temp, then not actually have one when he got home. I informed her that I had not seen her child that day, and after looking in my log, informed her that I had never seen the student the whole year. The teacher was calling from her class. I checked and lo-and-behold...no temp. She wasn't a happy camper. But that wasn't my circus.
