Thinking of going back into nursing....

Nurses Retired

Published

Hi All! I have been a nurse since 1993 but stopped working in the field about 6 years ago. I am looking into reentering the work force but feel like I need a refresher class and I'm not sure I want to go back to direct patient care. I'm older now and I know how exhausting nursing is (mentally and physically)...Any suggestions on how to go about re-entering the field in something like case management or utilization review? The bulk of my experience is in the Operating room, Mental Health, and pediatrics. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. :)

If you're retired and money is not the issue, please don't go back to nursing. '93 is long gap of catching up to do, i know you can do it and there are areas of nursing where you can find (not easy) work and start over. But if boredom from retirement is the reason, maybe that's where i can help you retire your "going back to daily grind plans". Changes in healthcare is so discouraging to go back to nursing. Sorry if i can't be of help. Just my honest opinion.

I don't see any reason why you shouldn't get back into nursing. I went back after being away much longer and if I could do it I don't see any reason why you can't. During those six years did you keep your license current, place it on inactive status or allow it to lapse?

If nursing is something that you enjoy! Go for it. I was a stay at home mom for over 10 yrs. took a refresher course online. I did not take clinical too expensive. It will all come back to you! I started back in home health. Now I'm doing 3, 12hr shift in the hospital. Believe it's not easy. Hospital would rather pay younger new grads for less money. Be patient it'spossible

Glenn -- Totally feel with what you're saying... and gotta say that I agree that the poster would be wise to give a lot of consideration to your comments.

I think the first thing I would do in your case would be to talk to case managers or utilization reviewers. Speak to potential employers and see if your experience would make you a good fit for one of those positions. My friend had to go work as a home health/hospice nurse for about 6 months to fill-in that bit of experience for her to work as a case manager. Now she has a very flexible work schedule and unless she is out on doing an intake, she works from home.

Did you allow your license to lapse? My state requires 80 clinical hours if you haven't worked as a nurse in 3 years. At 10 years they require a refresher course with 80-120hrs of clinical work to reinstate the license. Good luck and I hope you figure out what is best for you.

I am attemtping to return to the workforce and have not been at the bedside since 2000. I am well aware of the issues why returning to the clinical setting is not an option. I have been desperately trying relocate to the Sierras for several years so that I can retrain as a paralegal but have been stuck in Northern California rural community. Housekeepers make $25hr and have more job security here. The legal field is in desparete need of nurses and because of this I have decided to do Estate Planning for income and for the non-profit I founded. It would be great if there was non profit located in California that focused on ReEntry RNs and getting them back to work.

she stopped working 6 years ago,not in 93

6 years ago or in "93........The minute i will know i can afford to retire, even it is in the middle of my shift, i'll storm out of the door ( i'll clock out if i can remember). Read the book of Ernie Zelinski " How to Retire Happy, Wild and Free." If you need to go back because you have to, changes in healthcare is like a big pill to swallow but you can do it. I'm an Acute HDialysis nurse. Try it. My job is so easy. Good luck.
