Has anyone taken yoga? I am taking it this semester, has anyone had any positive results such as stress relief or weight loss etc... Tell me about your experience.

Specializes in NICU, Infection Control.

I have taken Hatha Yoga and BKS Iyengar yoga in the past. The BKS Iyengar is more of a workout than it looks. They both feel very good as you do them and I remember feeling much more "toned"--a lot of trunk strength, flexibility and balance. And good for stress reduction, IMHO. The emphasis on breathing awareness was excellent. I haven't had cold hands since.

I did go to one instructor who spent much of the class trying to get us to "feel our auras". Didn't go back.

I have done yoga in fitness class and on my own at home and really like it. I do believe it helps a lot with stress and weight loss. I just have to make time to do it lately .. and haven't been! I would recommend it, though!

I have been practicing yoga for almost a year now and get a lot out of the class. It doesn't burn many calories I hear but my god you get a workout! I've noticed my booty is tighter and I have more strength and of course flexibility and balance.

I really enjoy it, you just feel *so good* after practicing it, plus it's really a lot of fun...I like sun salutations the best. I haven't noticed much in the way of weight loss. For awhile I was only doing yoga and didn't lose any weight until I added back in my normal cardio.

I've never taken it at a university level. But for the past few years once or twice a week go to a class (I'm going tonight) and I love it.

Some of the classes do indeed burn calories, just depends. The Bikhram series that I attended claimed to burn about 330 calories.

I find it very stress relieving and relaxing. It completes a workout lifestyle that includes weight training and aerobic exercise.

Good luck.

I'm taking Yoga this semester too! I'm excited about but a little aprehensive as well. I'm not the most coordinated or flexible person in the world, and am also over weight. I decided that I needed a fun class this semester though and didn't want something that was a complete waste like Underwater Basketweaving (you always hear people talk about that, is it REALLY a class?!?!?!)

Let me know how you like it, I'm starting next Tuesday. Do you guys have to provide all your own eqpt/supplies? I haven't been able to find out about mine yet.

I love yoga. Luckily there are two yoga studios within walking distance of my house :) Lucky me.

I'm trying Bikram Yoga (hot yoga) for the first time on Friday... I'm a little apprehensive b/c I don't always do well with heat, but I've heard great things about it...that you can go further in your stretches in the heat.

I also start my Yoga class on Tuesday. The only thing that I have heard is that we have to buy our own mat. I'm wondering about those block thingys that I see in the stores for yoga (I'm not exactly sure what they are for:chuckle ) I guess I will find out Tuesday.

My sister bought me a mat, block and practice video for Christmas. My roommate and I tried it last week and it was kind of fun, hopefully it's better in person though. The block is to modify a position if you can't reach the full pose - it was a "must have" for me! Hopefully by the end of the semester I won't need. it. Good luck!
