Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello everyone!

I'm new to this site, but I love what I see already. Lots of great tips!! I just have a question about the classes I plan on registering for, for the spring of 2015. The pre-reqs for the ADN program (that I haven't already completed) are A&P 1, micro, & pharmacology. I also plan on taking Life span, growth, & dev. as my last course. Is it unheard of to take these classes together? I've gotten some *bulging eyes* from previous nursing students when I mention my first semester course load. Also, I'm a mommy, so I have to balance my family life as well as this course load. I have a 1 1/2 year old and I'm due October 28th with my second. TIA for any advise.

I did seriously think about taking some time off once my little one is born, but we really need the income (from me being a full-time student). Daycare in my area will cost roughly 1,000 monthly for 2 children. We will be barely scraping by as it is. The closest family I have is 4 hours away. I've looked into getting state assistance with the daycare cost, but I'm not sure if we will be approved. *Fingers Crossed*

I COMPLETELY understand this one. Been there! Just be cautious of risking your GPA for a few months of income. Not to mention the risk to your sanity. Can your husband wait to go to Houston, or can you all go together?

Unfortunately he can't wait. As soon as he graduates he has to find a job in Houston. My two options are either work full time and make about the same as I would as going to school or start my long schooling journey. I'm so excited to start school! I'm just intimidated since I don't know HOW HARD it really is going to be especially with 2 babies under 2.

I would split the science classes. Don't take both of those in one semester if you want to do well. They require a lot of studying. Schools are very competitive with grades, and getting A's is practically a must to get in. I would take one science and some other less difficult courses and add an exercise course because they don't generally require studying or homework and plus the exercise is good for you. :) Just my two cents! :) Good Luck!

You've got a lot of variables hanging here and you need a lot more than input from a bunch of strangers that are not entirely privy to what's required to get you through a day. Nursing school is pretty tough for most people on a good day. It will absolutely take over your life and the lives of those dependent on you. Plan carefully. Get professional help doing it. A good roadmap laid out in advance will be worth its' weight in gold. You can't get wasted time back.

If you want to know how difficult any particular curriculum is, you can look to see what the attrition rate is. Schools keep records. Ask other students.

Good luck to you and your family.

Hey lloracam11... I'm also in an ADN program and just finishing my pre-req's this semester. I took A&P1, ENG101, PSY201 and also went to night classes for my CNA certification. WAAAYYY too much but I some how I made it with A's and Dean's List. However, I WOULD NOT reccomend taking A&P1 & MICRO together unless you're on a split-term semester (7 weeks per term... A&P 1st term, MICRO 2nd Term). Doing them together would be a TON of information to try an assimilate. Plus, A&P2 is usually recommended before taking MICRO. Anyway... Just my two cents... Is it doable? Sure, I can't believe I was able to make it through my semester. Was it a good idea? No. Lol. Good Luck!

I took Bio 151 (4 credits), Chem 120 Bio Organic Chem (4 credits) and Human Growth and Dev together. This fall I need to finish my prerequisites so I'm taking Patho, Genetics, Micro and Nutrition. I spent/spend lots of time in the lab. I'm organized, which is a must. People said I'm nuts, but I want it. If you want to, you can do it. :D

Oh and I'm a single mom

Thank you for your input! I'm really glad I posted this before I went and registered for my classes. I would have probably had to drop a class or two if I had tried to take them together. Only 1 science at a time, got it ?

I'm in the same boat with needing a full courseload of I will lose my financial aid. But I agree about not taking more than one science at a time, unless they come very easily to you. If you eventually plan on going for your BSN, then look at the prereqs and general education you need for that degree. That's what I'm doing. Taking some of those classes to fill my schedule. That way it will take less time to finish my BSN as well.

this is what my friends told me to be able to keep my full time status for grants, do two classes and then look for a study skills class something along those lines for us it's just where you go and do homework, at our college they have a orientation if you show up you get a credit! I would look for something along those lines and then next quarter or semester you could do the rest

I've got bulging eyes after reading that haha :-) I really suggest taking A&P1 separate, or at lease with an easier class such as life span. I'm not a mom and I wouldn't even think about taking those science courses all at once. Spread it out. Take your time. Slow and steady, you'll get better grades this way. And, you won't be kicking yourself in the butt if you end up with a C or two and have to retake classes. That would be a waste of time and money, good luck!
