Should I continue to further my education of becoming a nurse or just pick another major??

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

OK so right now I'm taking pre-reqs in college so I can get my RN. At first I wanted to get my LVN first then do the bridge program but it seems like I'm just so confused as to what i want to do right now. First of all, I have three kids and a husband who's a truck driver. My husband always pushes me to complete my degree so as my parents. Don't get me wrong I do want to become a nurse but it seems like the college that I'm attending they have a waiting list and some people waited to get accepted in the RN program for about 1 and a half years. I don't want to wait that long. So I can also get in the LVN program but Lord knows how long I have to wait on that list as well. Anyways, I also just got laid off from my job and I really do want to work and go to school because at the end of the day I still have to take care of my babies. Anyways and hearing a lot of negativity from nurses saying that Nursing will burn me out and all the horror stories is making me want to turn away from wanting to become a nurse. Now I want to major in Business Admin but anyways I have all these mixed emotions I am just lost at this point.

Sorry I'm all over the place :(

How about you become a CNA? Classes typically take a few weeks. That way you can be working relatively soon, and can work while in nursing school. And maybe find a nursing program with a shorter waiting list?

That's a great idea but I actually went to a CNA program and completed the whole thing then I finally decided to get a job in home health while I was waiting to be certified. So anyways, the home health that I applied to gave me a job but they said I have to be certified within a month and i didn't have a problem with that because I was in the process of getting that done. Anyways, I told the company that I can't work with smoking patients because I have some breathing problems. So what do you know the first patient they gave me was the worse. She smoked in her house so much that the ceiling turned brown. So I told the company about the issue and they stopped calling me altogether. So I just decided to forget trying to get my certification and go to college......so I had a bad experience as a CNA...

I feel you on that. I have graduated high school 7 years ago and became a Medical Assistant after that. I have always wanted to become a nurse but at that time I had mixed feelings whether I should continue on or not. Long story short I held off for a long time trying to find myself. I did medical assisting after high school only because I needed to make sure if that was really the kind of environment I wanted to work in. Unfortunately at that time MA job were very rare in my area so I fell off the medical field and had tried several fields from being a waitress, retail attendant and call center agent. And I regret that thinkin I shouldve just went straight to nursing school. So just recently I enrolled to becoming a nurse to start on the LVN program just for sure that I will be finishing it prior to bridging to RN eventually. As being said, I think that lesson learned for me. NOTHING should not stop you from anything. Financially, Im pretty sure that you guys will be just fine if your husband atleast has a job while u go to school. You and I know that if nursing is really something that we want to do, YOU GO FOR IT. I always think that once you do the things u love with passion, then most likely things will fall into place. But keep in mind, NOTHING COMES EASY. Every job that pays more than the usual jobs does take lots of patience and pure determination to succeed in. So stop over analyzing things and turn your dreams into reality. If its meant for you, then OWN IT. Trust in yourself and dont let anything hold you back anymore. Make the fact of having children will be your inspiration to strive for a bigger dream..not only for you..but most especially for your FAMILY. Goodluck and God Bless you!

Go all the way! I'm currently in nursing school and there is no greater feeling than fulfilling your dreams. You're capable of doing more than you think. Just take the first step.

Quite frankly, it doesn't sound like you really want to be a nurse. I'm not sure you even want to work outside the home, which is fine if you can swing it financially as a stay at home mom. But you also just said you want to get a degree in business administration. What specifically do you want to do with a BA degree? You need to have an actual goal in your mind for that, as people don't just get hired to do "business." What really interests you? It sounds like your family is pressuring you to go into the nursing field, but your heart just isn't into it.

I actually really do want to be a nurse but every time I talk to somebody they always try to tell me some negative horror stories about nurses. I know I should not let people get to me like that but I do, I'm only human and then sometimes I always ask myself..."Am I smart enough to go through nursing school?""Will I make it???but I guess I have to stop being so negative and go for it...My negativity is really stressing me out..it's now or never....thank you for your input I really appreciate you.

Awww thank you very much for your amazing comment I definitely will do it and refuse to let anyone hold me back....:)

I will do my best and I promise I will not let anyone discourage me. Thank you very much because I can relate to someone and at least I know I am not the only one that feels like that. Really appreciate you from the bottom of my heart I do. I was confused up to this point.

Specializes in Critical Care.

I would either finish the BSN or transfer to an allied health degree that specifically involved research. Hospitals need lab workers. I don't know what type of degree that would be called, but your college should be able to help you choose an allied health degree that pertains to do lab research if that is what you want to do. Some lab workers are even unionized which usually is a good thing regarding pay and benefits, but I don't know what lab workers make or the various jobs they go by. Something for you to research in your spare time!

You're the one who has to do the job, not all those nay-Sayers. I know it's hard to turn a deaf ear to the negativity - I've let others opinions guide me now for about 10 years - but I've come to realize that it's my career, my life. So if you really want it just go for it.
