Should I continue to further my education of becoming a nurse or just pick another major??

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

OK so right now I'm taking pre-reqs in college so I can get my RN. At first I wanted to get my LVN first then do the bridge program but it seems like I'm just so confused as to what i want to do right now. First of all, I have three kids and a husband who's a truck driver. My husband always pushes me to complete my degree so as my parents. Don't get me wrong I do want to become a nurse but it seems like the college that I'm attending they have a waiting list and some people waited to get accepted in the RN program for about 1 and a half years. I don't want to wait that long. So I can also get in the LVN program but Lord knows how long I have to wait on that list as well. Anyways, I also just got laid off from my job and I really do want to work and go to school because at the end of the day I still have to take care of my babies. Anyways and hearing a lot of negativity from nurses saying that Nursing will burn me out and all the horror stories is making me want to turn away from wanting to become a nurse. Now I want to major in Business Admin but anyways I have all these mixed emotions I am just lost at this point.

I don't think there's a nurse out there that wasn't nervous about becoming a nurse. We all have our doubts. You definitely need to own your confidence. All nurses have horror stories but that's not just nursing. I have a BS in business from a former career which was nice at the time but didn't get me anywhere. You could get a business degree and become an administrator in a mursing home without being a nurse. I've been a nurse for almost nine years and enjoy what I do. It's a lot of hard work but it's worth it in the end. Good luck keep focused and you will succeed!

My suggestion to you would be to turn down the volume to the negativity and turn up the volume for the people that have more positive things to say. Google nursing student videos on YouTube, you will find a lot of nursing students that will give you the good, bad and ugly about nursing school. From my experience that is way more good in nursing school then the bad, but it's all in what you actually seek.

I will do my best and I promise I will not let anyone discourage me. Thank you very much because I can relate to someone and at least I know I am not the only one that feels like that. Really appreciate you from the bottom of my heart I do. I was confused up to this point.

Don't promise to anyone but to yourself!! And what you should promise yourself is "I will follow my own path, my own dreams" :)

I have been the exact same way for ever it seems. And I'm about to graduate with my associates degree so I'm running out of time to decide. I'm also in a similar situation with husband and kids and parents. YouTube really does help with inspiration but I have all the exact same fears and up until now I though I was alone in them. All the negativity from others about how nursing is a bad career field and also doubting myself with thinking I'm not smart enough to do this and finish. It's all been plaguing me as well. It kinda feels like family keeps pressing you to finish already but there's so many directions you can go in and you just wanna be done with school already but nursing school just to get in takes forever. I feel you 100% on it all. I'm actually so happy to read this cause it tells me I'm not crazy for feeling the same way. Just know your not alone and if u wanna chat about it all feel free to message me. I think you should go for nursing school otherwise you will keep regretting it if you never tried down then line as well.
