PLEASE HELP i cant get into nursing school

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Okay so I have been going to community college for about 5 years taking and retaking classes to try to increase my gpa. I had a 2.8 but I transferred to another school and now have a 3.0. Ive also taken the TEAS and got a 73%. Is that good? I have been applying to RN programs in my area but as of yet no luck. I am so discouraged I dont know what to do with myself. I have to admit I have struggled through school but mainly because of my personal situation. My home life really has not been condusive to learning but I have recently moved out and can now focus and I am doing much better. I just dont know how to fix things without having to start over (if there is such a thing). I live in the Philadelphia area and would really appreciate it if someone out there could lend some advise as to what to do and/or what schools I should apply to. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't give up on your dreams no matter what. Keep trying... I agree with some of the others, try the LPN route, and then think of bridging over to the RN. It might be a little easier to get in to an LPN/LVN program first. Remember the quote "never give up on your dreams, your day will come!"

I would also suggest that you look into CNA courses, and try and be a nursing assistant for a while. It will give you some practical experience, which would help to put you a leg ahead the rest of the applicants. Good luck!

If I was you I'd try to get on a school with a waiting list. They will have a minimum GPA you need to meet but other than that you basically get on the list.

The downside is waiting list can last around 3-4 years, at least in the Denver area.

If you want it bad enough the wait for you will be tolerable.

Even doing the LPN and working up to RN, your GPA will follow you. As an LPN currently doing the LPN to RN, I can tell you, we don't just automatically get in and we have to complete all the pre-req classes that anyone else does. While it does seem easier to get admitted into the programs, we too need to have a competitive GPA and meet all the requirements of the RN program because we are also vying for seats against other LPN's and those that might have withdrew from school prior to finishing, transfer students, etc.

My suggestion is to retake some of those classes with lower grades and retake the TEAS. Also, some programs have a lottery where they will take say the top 60% of applicants (meets and exceeds the requirements) and the remaining 40% of the seats are a lottery type thing where anyone who's met the requirements (even the minimum requirements) then have a chance at the remaining seats. In that case, someone with the minimum GPA can get a seat from the lottery over someone who missed being in the top 60% but has a higher GPA, more classes done etc over the student with the lower GPA etc. It's just luck of the draw.

I agree with some of the other posters on here. You need at least a 3.5 minimum thats how competitive it is. So many people are wanting to get into nursing. Schools will say their minimum GPA to apply to their program is a 2.75 or 3.0, but in reality its not. If there werent so many people trying to get into nursing school then you would be able to get in. TEAS need to be really high too. What you need to do is email nursing program coordinators/admissions people at schools you havent applied to and ask them what they have accepted for TEAS and GPA's for the past couple of semesters and ask them about the applicant pool so far for the upcoming semesters and also how an estimate of about how many people apply that way you know whether or not you have a chance of getting in if you apply. I did that when I was looking at nursing programs. The only reason Im not in one now is I dont want to be on a waiting list until late next year or the following year. Good luck!

I can give you some advice, but you probably won't like it. A GPA of 2.8-3.0 after five years of community college isn't going to get you in anywhere. A TEAS of 73% is also not good. I'm sorry you've had a difficult time, but you're now competing against students who do not have a poor scholastic record. Perhaps nursing isn't in the cards? I know there are others who will blow all kinds of positive smoke around, but honestly, the competition right now is fierce, and it doesn't look like you have what you're going to need to get in.

*** The above is good advice and I agree. Another thing to consider is that in the Philly area there are no jobs for new grads. It is bad for all new grads but much worse for associates degree grads. My advice is to consider a different field.

I have been reading some of the responses and have come across a few that mentioned to re-take a couple of your classes to get better grades. The colleges i am applying to here in cali are on a point system where you get awarded so many points for repeating a class OR get deducted so many points for repeating a class. So if you had gotten a C in any of your classes keep it a C and do not take the class. It just depends on the colleges you are trying to get into. Get every little detail you can about the college so you can do as much as you can to get in, Good luck

I actually went today and attended a seminar for LPN classes starting this fall and the proctor (who is also one of the clinical instructors) said Id be great and looks forward to receiving all of my admissions materials (which I just sent our today but they are not actually do till May 15th, trying to get an early start lol). The reason why I feel Id be a great nurse is not simply because I am a people person who likes helping others (which I am), its also because I have been working in a Pediatric Facility as a Rehab Tech for the past 3 years. I work side by side with nurses and nurse practitioners who often look to me for help with their patients when they are to busy to do so. I volunteered first and then worked my way up. Also, I know getting a B in my classes is not that significant in comparison but when retaken all at the same time (Micro, A&P 1 and 2, Chem 1 and Organic) meaning in the same semester (yes I retook all 5 simultaneously, A&P 2 and Micro were only taken once) I think my B is pretty awesome. I doubt any of that was taken into consideration though, but anyways I am in no way EVER giving up. I do not suffer from any delusions, I know what I am supposed to be and that is in fact a Nurse and I will spend as long as it takes working my way up. Im only 22 so in my opinion I have plenty of time to reach my goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner. Thanks for all your support guys!!

The LPN programs out here have a really low GPA requirement of a 2.0 and TEAS score requirements of 58.9 and the applicants are often fresh out of high school. My concern is after I get my LPN I wonder if I am still going to have a problem getting into an LPN-RN program because my college gpa will still only be a 3.0. The program has science courses in it but at a basic level and I was told I didnt have to take them because I already took the 200 level classes and got A's and B's. Idk I am wondering if I should take them anyway and get A's?

Hi Palexander3512, It's good to seek advice and trust me I seek advice all the time. I'm right where you are trying to get in. I did Medical assistance and when I got layed off my job I decided to go back to school. The same school that I went to Had an F on my transcript. I walked away from that school a year before I was ready When I went back I was ready. I worked hard and now I have a 3.7. I have been through a lot while in school. This month I'm going to take several entrance exams and I have confidence that the right school will pick me. One thing that has helped my faith is GOD. He's the way maker and my provider so even though I get advice from others my determination is based on what my god says. If he got you through abuse and other things he will get you through school. Don't keep changing lanes based on others. Life isn't going to be easy so you may as well fight it out. Don't get offended by others getting through school faster than you. Everyone's blessing comes at different times in life. If this isn't for you another door will open when this one closes. Ask yourself, Has another door opened for you before you close this one. Remember not even you know your future. God only knows. There may not be several colleges for you but I believe there is one college out there for. Keep searching, don't limit yourself to just your area, and believe that if he brought you this far then he will still keep on blessing you. Good luck with everything you do!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much for your kind words of inspiration. I will deff keep them in mind. Good luck on your entrance exams I know you'll do fine. Ill keep you in my prayers :)

Thanks I try to speak life and not death and Gods word says so. Never to hurt but to encourage. Same to you
