Need advice!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hi, so I've contemplated nursing school for a while. I'm currently a hair dresser at a great salon. I love the people I work with and I enjoy doing hair most of the time, but I'm looking for a change. My husband and I just had our first baby 2 months ago. I love being a mother! I'm still on maternity leave and I feel like where I've been home spending time with her it makes me realize I want more for her.

I went to talk to an adviser at a university in my area yesterday. I'm going to have to do possibly a year of pre requisites. Then she told me to maybe try the nursing program in the evenings for my associates, then RN to BSN. My goal is to work with women's health and maternity. I absolutely loved all the nurses when I had my daughter and it's always been an area that interests me, but I know it's the hardest place to find a job. :no:

So im just rambling but Im only gonna be working 3 days a week at the salon. For those 3 days, I don't do too bad. I will probably leave work while in school.

Am I stupid for leaving a flexible job to go to school? I think I'm just too comfortable there. There's not many benefits besides it being flexible. I also feel like if I go to school I'm going to miss out on my baby growing. Not to mention the debt I will accumulate for schooling.

I just need to hear your stories, I know people do this all the time. So how did all of you juggle it?

Congratulations on your new baby! Parenthood can really change your perspective, right? Is your husband on board with your plans? It will really help if he is able to step up and be a 'full parent' rather than a strictly ornamental father.... you know, one of the ones that say that they are "baby sitting" whenever they have to assume responsibility for their own child.

I think your advisor has provided excellent advice. Begin by taking those pre-requisites. You can take your time - focusing on making really high grades rather than rushing through. You could even space it out so that you are ready to attend nursing school by the time your baby is ready for kindergarten.... nursing school will still be there.

I decided to go to nursing school after having my first baby. I also wanted to do L & D or women's health or maternity/new baby. I ended up getting my BSN and going straight into adult critical care.

Keep an open mind. You might find that your interests change. Until I got into the actual nursing program, with its structured curriculum, I went to school part time. Once I started working, I did three 12s per week. After a few years, I went part time, then eventually PRN. The needs of your children/family will often influence how much you work, assuming your SO is contributing an income which will allow you to do so.

Many new mothers become enamored with the idea of working in maternity and women's health.

You have just experienced childbirth. and admire those that helped you.

THAT is not a reason to pursue a difficult course of study with the hopes of becoming a nurse.

Stay home with the baby, let the hormones wind down. Keep the day job... take a few pre-requisites.... and then see how you feel about your "goal".
