Male nursing dress code?

Do male nurses require a hair length? My hair is medium and does not touch my shoulders nor my collar(would never grow it long) but i have a side swept fringe. Is it okay for the job? I googled this question but most of the answers were " it depends on the hospital" or " as long as its well groomed

You will have to ask the advisors in your program. I don't know which hair style you are describing but does it look professional? If it is off the collar it should be okay. Do you have problems with hair in your eyes? Will you get hair in your sterile field?

These are the concepts around hair length and style but the final decision rests on your program and facility. Me, I like clean cut, air force.....

I doubt that it would be a problem. I've seen male nurses and students with piercings and longer hair, or long full beards. But yes, you have to make it look nice, clean and neat so it doesn't turn people off. Some schools are more strict about appearance because they don't want to risk representing the school in any unprofessional way. But as for working in the hospital, I doubt they would really care as long as you're neat.

You will need to check your school or hospital dress code and when in doubt check with your supervisor. To me it wouldn't be a problem, but I do know of at least two schools in my area that want the make students to have very short hair.

Yes each school is different. I know at mine if as a woman you have long hair it has to be pulled up off the shoulder and it can't hang in your face. So I know with my hair style although it is short in the back it is longer in the front and it will have to be pulled back off of my face because if I would lean over someone my hair could possibly say get in a wound or something. Read your school's policies.

Policies certainly vary, but in general, as long as it's out of your face (bad to have it falling in your face while you're trying to catheterize someone) and tidy, you're likely fine. You can always ask in the beginning.

Thanks guys. I read my school policies and it only says "must be neat and if long must be tied above the neck" something like that. I hope this goes for men as well.

I will tell you this..where I work they don't like long hair on guys. You have to remember something man...you will be taking care of people who are very sick and often dying. You will have family members of patients who are professionals...nurses and doctors and lawyers IN the room while you are working. Do everything you can to look PROFESSIONAL. It will save you many headaches. If you look and act professional you will already have more credibility with the patient and family member. It is up to you,but anything I can do to make my life easier I do it.

That would have passed our strict dress code, but a little shaggy for me :whistling:....
