how long does it take to finish the prerequisites?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

My school has 15 but only micro biology and a/p 1 and2 are manditory. I want to take them all to have a better chance to get in to the nursing classes. How many did you have to take and how many semester did it take to complete?

Prereqs have taken me 2 years to complete, but many people do it in less time. 4 semesters seems average.

Mine has 6 pre reqs BUT those pre reqs have pre reqs so I have to the beg. algebra because I was 3 points shy on the placement test for intermediate, then intermediate algebra, a bio w/a lab, a chem with a lab the chem has a pre req of bio w/ a lab, A&P I & II, English, etc. It will take me 2 years but I plan on taking my gen ed core classes at the same time so I'll just have the nursing cores. ETA I'm glad I'm not the only one who has to start algebra from the beginning. It was my best subject in school but I guess my brain has turned to mush.

I am going to a CC and we had 5-6 that we have to complete before we can vie for selection. I've had to take Basic College Mathematics, Writing, SCT100 (Microcomputers) and I am currently taking A&P and Psychology. Those are all I've had to take and I will be selection ready. It used to be mandatory that we also take MedTerm, but that's changed unless you're in a different program of study, such as radiology, etc. LPN does not require MT anymore - so I had a total of 5 to take and it will be a total of 1 quarter + 1 semester that I had to do for pre-reqs. The quarter system made it easier to get through...not sure how I'm going to feel towards the middle of this semester, considering I'm so used to the quarter system. :D

Since I have a BA degree already, it is taking me two semesters to finish prereqs...and that's taking two classes this semester and one next semester. We have co-reqs, too, that I want to get out of the way before starting NS. But I will do that while I'm waiting to start.

At my school/CC it's 9 prereqs for ADN snd 5 for PN program. It has taken me two years only bc I work fulltime and have a small child. It just depends on your work schedule and what ever else is going on in your life. At my CC you can apply to ADN program after you take the 5 out of 9, but I chose to do all bc when I get into the program I will only have my nursing classes. Also at my school if you are taking a coreq/gen ed class and fail while you are in the program you will be dropped. It doesn't matter if you take two or more classes and how long it will take, you should stay focus on getting A's and B's, having a high gpa to get in bc nursing school is competitive,

My school has 11 prerequisite classes you need before applying to the ABSN program. My guess is that most people already have at least 1/3 of those classes done from their first degree. I had 4 classes I still needed--nutrition, A&P 1 and 2, and microbiology. Doesn't sound like a lot, but it is going to take me a while since I don't want to take 2 lab classes at the same time. I took nutrition this past summer, I am in A&P 1 right now, and I plan on taking A&P 2 in the spring and microbio in fall 2012. My school's program only starts once a year in the fall, so the soonest I could start nursing school is fall 2013, even though I only have 3 prereq classes left at this point. Waiting sucks. :-(

Consider also that some/most community colleges (I don't know if this is where you are going) have higher demand for those classes that you want to get into than a supply of instructors. I know many a student with a one year plan who couldn't get into the bio class that was a pre-req for the A&P I class and then after taking the bio course, had to wait another term to take the first A&P. Be flexible and concentrate on getting outstanding grades rather than getting done early.
