Grade in Anatomy and Physiology

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi all! I'm very much interested in applying to the nursing program this October, get accepted and start the program this January. Only problem is I received a C in Anatomy and Physiology II. I took it over the summer and am so disappointed in myself. I did take Anatomy and Physiology I over the fall and received an A-, but I just don't know what happened over the summer. It was very intense. I spoke to my advisor and she said "all hope is not lost" and that I just need to really study and aim for an 80%+ on the TEAS test. I will be taking Microbiology and Pathopysiology this fall (I can apply to the nursing program while taking these 2 classes). Has anyone gone through something similar like this? Is all hope not lost? Thanks in advance for your comments and help!

I forgot to answer the OP question, hope is never lost. Never give up on your dreams. There is always an avenue, just stay focused on your goals and keep moving forward. As for me, I'm very religious, so I pray daily. This helps me when I'm feeling defeated or discouraged.

Hope is certainly not lost! I have a B in A&P I and a C in A&P II on my transcript, but I still was accepted into a nursing program- a BSN program, at that. What's important is that regardless of grade(s), I understand the material moving forward into my program, and that I maintained high grades in my other Science courses. Absolutely do not give up on your dream because you will get there! Aim high, do some volunteer work (although I never did) to gain some experience, and even approach professors for recommendations. I work in a hospital, and prior to switching to night shift, I worked in an outpatient setting, so I was able to get recommendation letters from two physicians which I submitted even though they weren't requested or required. Whether my experience and recommendation letters gave me an edge is beyond me- but anything extra certainly cannot hurt!

Good luck and keep pushing forward! You will accomplish your goal and dream!

Wow, what school are you from. I am attending a comm. college and they use a point system. The only folks accepted last fall had either all A's or A's and B's in A&P I & II. Noone with a C or below got in. I want to go to your school. lol;)

My grade just posted and I got a C, I will have to take it again and get an A this time to even have a chance of a RN or BSN program in this area.

My story is that I took A & P I in the summer & did awful. It put me back a semester because I retook it the following fall & got a B (all of my science pre reqs were B's). Even though I have the first awful grade on my transcripts, my GPA only factors in the second A & P I grade.

If you aren't feeling comfortable with your GPA & there is nothing else you can do with your grades then improvise. I got an 81% on my TEAs, sent in 5 recommendations (3 academic, 1 personal & 1 professional), a resume, a personal statement, & an essay. Every school I applied to had different requirements, but I sent all of that to every school. The worst they could do is throw it away & know I tried.

At my local community college, several successful applicants got a C in either AP I or AP II; many got Cs in chemistry (low Cs at that!).

As another poster already mentioned, many colleges now adhere to a point system to try to bring some transparency and consistency to the admission process. Just do really well in your upcoming classes to make up for the C....it's all the same points so an "A" in each of your upcoming classes this fall will cancel out the C this summer, and also raise your GPA (which my school and presumably others use as a tie-breaker, or perhaps as part of the points tally).

Don't stress out about it... a C is not going to kill you. Microbiology is no slouch class, so if you can pull an A in that, you'll be right back on track. Just be sure to attend every lab and take a lot of notes in lab (esp. if lab reports are required and there are a lot of lab quizzes) because micro tends to be a lot more lab-focused than other prerequisite classes for nursing, and the lab tends to be worth more points towards the overall grade.

If you have an unknown bacteria identification lab paper/ project as most micro classes do, be sure to do everything very carefully and exactly as instructed. For my micro class, the unknown was worth a lot of points, and was somewhat easy to foul up and get the wrong results on if one was careless or rushed through the assays. If you are careful, though, you should be able to correctly id the unknown and earn the points. For me, micro was not in any way harder than AP I or II, just a lot more lab time and lab work.

Good luck to you!

it is totally possible to get an A during a summer session but it depends on the person taking the class and if they have any experience in taking summer class because there is much less time to relax and absorb the information between classes.

I do not think that all hope is lost. I would strive to kick butt in the two science classes that you will take in the Fall B+ or better...that way your grades will average out. Summer accelerated courses are TOUGH (as you know)! I took AP II and it was by some divine intervention that I received a B. Don't be too hard on yourself. You will get where you need to be!!

I completed A&P 2 yestetday with an A-. It was not easy for me. Like the others said, if you plan on taking any science class whether it is in the summer or winter you can't fall behind. Generally the sciences requires a lot of information to retain in a short period of time, such as in the summer. All is not lost, make a come back in the next science class & aim for stellar grades on your pre-admission exams..Good Luck!!

thanks all! I go to school in the DC/MD/VA area and my advisor told me last semester the average gpa was a 3.2 and TEAS test was an 80%. I am a little hopeful but still doubtful :(

I live in the DMV area! But am attending nursing school in Baltimore. What school are you looking at?

I would not say that all hope is lost. I think that it is kind of dumb that you had taken that class in the summer though. You should just retake it within the regular semester and try try to get at least a B. How often do you study per week?

This sounds a bit presumptuous of you to state that to the OP. Not only did I take A&P II during the summer a few years ago. I passed with a high B because I was determined to pass. I kept my same professor from the previous semester and study my butt off. Smh.

Anyhow OP, all hope is not loss. I am sure you will be fine. Find out your options about possibly taking the class again. Whether it will count for you or against your. And study as much as possible for the TEAS. Don't give up hope ad yet. Best wishes to you.
