A&P I during Summer Semester?

Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hey fellow pre-n students! I am signing up for summer semester this year and was wondering if anyone has ever taken A&P I during summer sem? Not sure how long the class is, probably somewhere around 8-9 weeks only, and we have to dissect cadavers. Does anyone think it's worth waiting until Fall so it can be spread out longer? I'm a 4.0 GPA student, I can handle a courseload. But to qualify for financial aid I need at least 6 cr hr. A&P I is 4 so I was going to take intro to sociology which is 3, giving me 7 cr hr. The sociology I'm hoping to take is with a teacher who gives all tests and quizzes online, no homework, and only a few pop quizzes just to make sure you actually go to class. So I don't think that would interfere at all. The other option is just playing it safe with taking MIcrobio & Soc instead of A&P. Opinions??

Thanks in advance!!! :D

I took anatomy last summer in a 3/4 week class. It was hard, I hated my life, but I made an A. I took biology I the summer before last and it wasn't nearly as hard. I think it's because you have to memorize all the bones and muscles in such a short amount of time. It's doable though!! I definitely would take anatomy over micro, a lot of students have a harder time with micro and you probably want to be able to see some sunlight over summer!

It depends on what else you having going on in your life. Do you work full time, have children, etc?

Personally, I would not want to take such a big class in a short summer semester. There is so much information to retain and some of the physio can be difficult to understand. Isn't there any non-science course you can take along with Sociology? I would try to take the "easy" classes over the summer....Intro to Computers, Speech, Human Growth & Development, Nutrition.

I took A and P 1 last summer and actually enjoyed the class and the accelerated format. It was a little tough the first exam and lab practical, but after getting the hang ofthe flow of class, things went smoothly. I didn't work however, but had a 5 year old son and was preggo at the time...

I work full-time and took A&P I last summer in a class that was Monday - Thursday, 6-10pm, for 5 weeks starting in May and ending in late June. It was a LOT of work, and completely sucked to work 8+ hours and then rush to get to class on time in rush-hour traffic, not to mention I didn't really eat dinner for those 5 weeks. Luckily, our teacher never kept us till 10 and I did get an A, but it was a lot of information to retain in 5 weeks. I took A&P II in the Fall and I noticed that everything seemed to stick a lot more when it was spread out over 15 weeks instead of 5. In the end, I think it will depend on what fits best into your schedule. I was determined to get into an accelerated BSN program this Fall, so I had no choice but to take A&P I in the summer. And if I get into this BSN program, I will also have to take an 8-week Microbiology class this summer because they canceled the one I was supposed to take this semester. If you can handle the workload and it will make a difference in when you'll get done your prereqs, then I say go for it. Good luck!

Been there done that, my advice is go for it. Like earlier posters have mentioned, it will be a condensed course load and will not be a walk in the park. But at the end of the day you'll be glad you got it out of the way.

I plan to take AP2 in the summer. I'm taking AP1 right now and the class is kind of slow. There is a lot to memorize but it doesn't take a lot of time to do it.

Can't tell you from experience but I signed up for AP 1 for this summer. I think it helps to know going in that it will be intense, but for a short amount of time. I'm right there with ya!

A&P in the summer is a great idea! I find the faster a class goes, the more time I put in and the less time to get distracted!

I say go for it. I took A&P I this past summer semester, as well as a nurtrition class and worked full time. I took the classes online, so I only had to go to campus for exams, which was nice because I could do my work at night after work, or early in the morning. I wished I had taken the class in a classroom, but at the same time, the convenience of an online class and online labs was very nice.

I would be wary of taking micro and considering it an easier class to take during the summer. Unless you have a biology knowledge base already, micro really isn't easier than A&P I. If you already have a lot of background knowledge, either class should be quite doable during the summer.

Thanks everyone! I do have lots of background in bio already, but as long as the day care for my son goes through I think I will be taking the A&P. I agree that the shorter and more intense the class, I work harder and don't get so distracted.
