"Over studying"

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone,

I am curious to your opinion on whether or not you think that its possible to "over study". There are some people that I know that tell me that I may over study sometimes but I didnt know that was possible. Also, how many hours do you usually spend per week studying?

Absolutely it is possible to over study. I have seen it many times in the classes I teach (non-nursing classes).

I think you can over study and I am very guilty of this! This past summer semester, I probably averaged 3-4 hours a day, 5-6 days a week for A&P II. Yes, I did well on all my tests, but then came the final and I had a very busy weekend and only studied maybe 4-5 hours total and ended up with a very good grade as well, plus I was more rested and calm on the test. There has to be a fine balance between studying to know and understand the material and keeping your sanity (I am still working on this).

Thanks, I guess I am going to have to work on finding that balance. Its sooo hard because I want to really know the material.

I don't believe in over studying. There's studying too much which can make you over think things but our minds is an endless storage unit. Studying a lot is mentally briefed but we won't catch a hemorrhage off of it

I don't believe in over studying, but I do believe in over thinking. Sometimes those can go hand in hand, but I tend to sit back on tests and rethink it when it seems to get ridiculously complicated, usually it's because I'm over thinking it. Being prepared with all the information tends to leave me feeling confident, which allows me to test much better then when I feel I've understudied.

I don't think it can happen. I might say cramming is over-studying because you're trying to fit way too much info into the brain at one time, but I don't think you can over-study in general. You can, however, over-think things, but that's another story...

I don't believe you can over study, but you can study at the wrong time! I learned to never pick up or even look at my notes for a test the same day of. You should have all your studying done before that. I found that when I look at them the day of the test, I only partially see whats there and when the actual test comes, I second guess myself!

Yes! The best advice I was given was "get a good night sleep the night before, and when everyone is scrambling asking questions outside the classroom before the test-keep your head down and plug your ears!"

Cramming is like pushing it in one side, as it falls out the other!

Yes, you can over study. When you are at a point where you feel burned out and you're just "studying" but the materials aren't sinking in, then take a long break.

I agree with this. I think you can over-cram. If you study for a few hours everyday and not just the night before the test, you will do fine.

Also, try writing things out in an essay. That ALWAYS helped me. For example, when we learned cellular respiration in A&P I or the processes of bone growth, I would always write the process in an essay. The more "out there" I made the essay, the easier it was for me to remember.
