    Alright ladies and gentlemen:
As you may have recalled I was totally bummed about my first exam grade (77), and took my second exam yesterday (86)....my biggest problem is I skip over questions that I'm not sure about, and forget to go back and answer them. The even more pitiful aspect of this is, if I had completed the questions I forgot to answer, I would have had an A. I did it on the first exam and was determined not to do it again, and I did it again. Anyhow, I'm still happy with an 86.

I could have done better on my lab exam today, I made the same mistake and only read an essay question half way....it cost me but luckily I still made a 92. I could kick myself for it
Try to do better next time, you can still pull your grade up to an A, it's not too late.

I also did a motility test and some other tests and will see those results tomorrow. I am anxious and hope things will still add up. Our teacher said that our test results might not have exactly match our lab manual...and we should give our best educated guess.
I hope things will work out for you. Good luck.
It would be nice if she said that to us, but I figure an educated asssssumption is probably what she will get from everyone. We did gram stain, acid fast, capsular, sim for motility and H2S production. oxidase, catalase, indole, MRVP, starch hydrolysis, glucose, lactose, citrate, urease, nitrate, growth patterns on nutrient agar, BAP, and slants etc. Some tests add up to one thing, some to another... I think we can safely assume between two different nasty's, but dangitt it is still unknown. Thank GOODness I have no intention of going to work in a micro lab LMAO:roll

What bug do you think you have? Maybe I can help you get it identified. I narrowed mine down and strongly believe that I have Proteus vulgaris, a Gram- bacillus which produces H2S and my biochem test results distinguish it from its cousin Proteus mirabelis. I couldn't do any lab rat job either :chuckle

I believe we have a flavobacterium (I am really lucky we don't need to know the species, just the genus and a few tests we could perform to find the species). The tables in bergey's manual are making my head spin:spin: , but I feel pretty good about the fact that we have done all the tests and redone them, because I saw a few people practically just starting out with their testing last thursday (It is due monday and We had 2 flipping wks to do all this... I just don't get people sometimes)

Well, my second test of the semester is coming up tomorrow. I've put in a lot of hours and work into studying and learning this information, so I hope it all serves me well tomorrow morning. It covers Microbial metabolism, growth, DNA, and the technology. That is a lot of information--and pretty complex too. I think I got it down though. Right now I am taking like a half hour break, wishing the noodles would boil faster so I can have some spagetti Good luck to everyone who is also studying. Sucks I can't watch the finale to the Bachelor--but I am TiVO-ing it, haha. I hope I don't accidently find out who he picked through the internet or news. I bet he picks Moana (bla!). haha ok.

I have a test tomorrow, too. I studied and will read more later when my son is in bed.....hmmm spagetti, make a huge plate for me and beam it over
I went to open lab today and spent some time with my "stinky baby proteus" so far so good and all tests confirm my findings!!!!!
Whatever material you will have a test on will be in our next segment. I guess you are way ahead of us. How is your unknown coming along? Good luck tomorrow and let me know how things went for you.

I'm very nervous about the unknown test. I don't know what to expect at all. Does it work kind of like this: you receive a plate with an unknown culture; you do a Gram stain to determine if it's + or - and then continue with other tests to narrow it down? I think I would settle down a little if I knew exactly how this is going to work. Too bad they don't have a "chewing fingernails" smiley!

Every instructor has their own peculiar form of torture when it comes to the unkown I think, however what you said is the general way of things. Grab your unknown, innoculate slants and plates and broths etc etc. Figure out gram - or + and perform whatever tests they give you or tell you to do till you figure out what you have. (or as in my case do a gazillion tests wether you need them or not just for practice and then whittle the info down till you THINK know what you have).

You've go the right idea. We were given a broth and had to streak a plate and a slant and then took it from there with a Gram-and acid fast stain. Once you got your gram stain you will be able to narrow it down and then get into the biochemical tests. Our labs are so short that I needed to put in open lab time to get going....good luck, you'll do great!

Thanks! Actually, we don't start our Unknowns in lab until after Spring break, which is not this week, but next week (Spring break). Sooo, after that--we shall see how it goes! My "partner" already dropped (kind of happy because he smelt horrible like an ash trey and he just kind of slowed me down, lol) and then the other guy at my table--his partner dropped, so we are working together, but now HE might drop--so I'll probably be all alone!! haha I don't mind though. Good luck on your test! Oh, and the spagetti was delicioussss

Microbiology can give you a Mega headache!!!!!! There is nothing worse than a bad lab partner, and you might just be better off alone. I had some terrible partners but sit somewhere else......at least they are pleasant.
We will have a case study which will count as one lecture test before our spring break in 2 weeks. Good luck to you,too tomorrow. I had a naked baked potato with only a tiny little bit of butter for flavor to curb the hunger..... I am getting reasy to ride my stationary bike so I didn't want to eat too much I hate cutting calories

I had my midterm practical tonight, it went pretty well. I am excited about getting my second lecture test back though. I got 104 out of 107!! I am so relieved, I missed a lab class and that takes 10 points off my lab grade so this test will really help me make it up.
