Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

Wow! That's awful. I am so sorry. I am from Cincinnati too and researching schools. Where would you recommend if not OU? Thanks!

I just figured out that it will take me 16 more months to complete this degree, and that is with taking 3 couses per semester. I only have 4 more nusing classes, but the gen ed are what is taking so long. When I am finished I will have taken the 9 Nursing and 13 additional courses........ I think if I had known this going in, I wouldn't have done it. I am burnt out on school. I've been taking classes for a year with no break except the time between semesters in December.

And 16 more months... with no breaks, just makes it sounds ovewhelming.

Anyone else feel that way??

If you have the resources and interest, my manager did the RN to MSN at Xavier. She was a diploma grad too, and didn't have to take all the stuff OU is making me take. She didnt have to have Freshman Comp, didn't have to take Chemistry, retake Soc or Psych.

Everyone's circumstances are different, and it wasn't a good fit for me for several reaons, but if you think you will want your MSN, check it out.

Xavier is so expensive! I haven't gotten my DARS from OU back yet, but will NOT take Chemistry again so that could be a deal breaker for me.

Yes, Xavier is very expensive. That is why I didn't choose that route. If you already had chemistry, then you shouldn't have to take it. I am, well... let's just say, a seasoned nurse... been a very long time since I was in Nursing School, am a diploma grad. They said b/c much of my course work was blended into the nursing courses and not stand alone, they don't count. If you have your AD, will be much easier for you.

I really like the 5 week format for the nursing couses at OU. Just when you get really sick of a class, it's over. Moves things along. But most of the extra courses are not in the 5 wk format, that is why it is taking me so long.

Good luck on you road to your BSN!!!

I'm from Cincinnati as well. Were you a diploma RN? Just curious why so many prerequisites? I work at Two hospitals inCincinnati and 1 hospital requires it. The other encourages it.

Sorry didn't read entire page b4 I posted. Hang in there. I'm unable to take more than 1 class at at time. So it will take me awhile to finish. But I'm in no hurry because it doesn't mean anything to me just my employer.

Happy Easter to all my study buddies!

I'm finding it kind of hard to get into it because of the work due and hanging over my head. Any one else?

I hear ya Mary!! I just can't get motivated, even though its my very last class & I'm done. Then again I'm a HORRIBLE procrastinator.

Ok peeps it's registration time, I want easy classes to take at OU for the following:

junior composition

Cross cultural

Fine arts

Humanities and literature

Any suggestions would be grateful, these are my last classes to take besides 4600!!!!

Specializes in ICU,ER, Radiology, Online education.

Happy Easter to you also Mary and everyone else. I cannot get motivated on this genogram and taking loads of time to do. I'm just starting and have a long way to go. Hope I make it! koolmaditz I took anthropology at WOSC and nutrition and will be taking a 4 week music class there.

Specializes in nursing.

I just found out I am 5 credits short with only 2 classes remaining after this semester. I was completely blindsided.....I guess because I wasn't focusing on the credit hours on the DARS. I have just about finished every class I was instructed to take but the extra electives required do not show on the report. You might want to check it out. I was told the school encourages independence in their students, especially the 18 year olds just starting out at OU,lol. What a joke.
