Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

wow, what a bummer. I know they told me if I had tested out of a couple of classes, I would have had to take electives. But this is a good reminder to keep an eye on it.

Yes keep an eye on it. The academic advisors are not responsible for monitoring your progress and credit hours, even though they plot out your classes. I heard some real zingers yesterday from that place! Still shaking my head in disbelief.......

I have never even thought to look at credit hours. I figured the advisor did that when she was telling me what I had to take. So can you take anything you want to fulfill the credit hours? I agree, that extra five credit hours stinks when you were expecting to be done soon. Look at the positive, you are almost done!!!!

Be careful when choosing, I believe only the course offerings under the RN-BSN classes can be taken for the same fee schedule. If you take other OU classes they cost significantly more per credit hour.

"It is not the responsibility of the adviser to keep track of your hours. We encourage independence with our students". I will have completed everything I was told to do in 2011 and again with the TDCP form but I fell short in the end when it comes to the total credit hours. I can take whatever I want...."bowling if I want to"........But the cost is higher if you go outside the rn to bsn courses. How about I go outside the entire school to get them???? Then you won't get any more of my money! I was due to finish by the beginning of august but now that's pushed back well into the fall. :crying2:

I just got accepted and start in May. Im hoping to find some classmates on here. Im a new member of allnurses.com. Just signed up today. Ohio University was the only school i applied to and I applied on February 25h and got accepted on April 1st. I had been trying to decide on a specialy for 3 1/2 years and finally decided on FNP. I have to get my BSN first of course. I liked Ohio University for cost and popularity and it is a brick and mortar school in my home state. They also have the Family Nurse Practioner online program. I really looked at a lot of schools and almost applied to western governers while waiting for acceptance but read that they have the lowest graduation rate in the U.S. Im extremely motivated but that still made me nervous. I moved my acceptance along by contacting the transfer admissions advisor with questions after a friend told me to make sure they knew my name. I contacted him via email and asked if were at all possible for me to be accepted to start the summer 1 session if I had applied and had my transcripts in on time. He said if that was what I applied for, then yes. I went ahead and told him I was motivated and excited to get started and that I apologize for bothering him and will wait till I hear from them. His response was, "haha, no problem." I put in a request for you to be admitted today. You should get your acceptance letter soon. I received my acceptance letter 4 days later on April 1st. IM SO EXCITED!! If you want accepted into Ohio University's RN to BSN online program fast, do as my friend told me to do and MAKE SURE THEY KNOW YOUR NAME. It worked for me. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!! Im so excited for this journay even though I know its going to be difficult being a single mom, working full-time with 2 kids. Im looking for friends who want to work together and offer support so please contact me if your starting in May. I wish i understood my Credit transfer report and financial aide lack of info. If anyone can enlighten me, please do.

Hey Guys!

Can anyone give a TRUE estimate for tuition? I've been on the website but I often find they don't really reflect the true costs including books, etc. I do have some transfer credits I believe but I'd like a higher side estimate if possible. Cost is a very important factor in this decision. Thanks! (please include fees, books, I'd like TOTAL cost for entire RN to BSN program)

That in my opinion is impossible to answer exactly since we don't know exactly how many credits you need or which program you are in. If you are in the RN to BSN AOI figure $240 per credit hour for classes listed under this program. Classes not offered through this program that you take at OU are much higher. Books--depends on whether you buy used, new, or rent and which classes you are taking. Some books can cost $200 and others cost $10. I've been in the program long enough to see a significant hike in tuition. I believe it was around $80-$90 per credit hour. Don't quote me on that--school has fried my brain! So back to your question--figure out how many semester hours you fall short of 120 along with the required nursing and non nursing courses and figure generously $150 per book plus computer, ink, paper, calculator, notebook, printer, then plan on forking out more than that total and you have your answer. I've taken 19 classes (some outside of OU) to fulfill my needed classes to graduate and I believe tuition and books thus far have been around $13,000.

Hi I am hoping to start classes in November but I need statics first. How tough is that to do online? I did my college algebra online but i am worried about stats. I took it in college with my first degree and I dropped it! Any advice would be appreciated!

maloneycr. I took mine at iowacconline. Great class, very non-threatening and great instructor! Weekly DB posts, 1 quiz a week that you can take as many times as you want, mid term and final. All online and less than $500. 8 weeks

Hi Woodsyny! I just looked at your online suggestion for stats and looks great. Quick question- does it matter what "parent school" you choose to take the online courses? And how long does it take to be accepted to enroll? I'm trying to get the oct 8 week stats course and wondering if I have enough time.... Thanks in advance!
