Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

If anyone is taking Family Health Nursing and needs the book (Kaakinen, 4th ed) send me a message. I have several for free. Please include an email address as I cannot respond via private messages. I am short of the 15 message quota to respond. Best, MBH.

Hi Everyone,

I read the first 50 pages of this thread and am trying to find out how much the program has changed in 2 years. I know in 2011 the classes were each 5 weeks, but I just watched a RN to BSN video on the OU website and it says the classes are 7 weeks long now and you have to take them in consecutive order. I am either watching the wrong video or their program has really changed. Any input is much appreciated. Thank you!

Do you have a link to the videos? I am currently in the program, and the classes are 5 weeks. 3 start dates/semester. They can be taken in any order, EXCEPT: You must take 4510 first, and 4600 last. I have not heard of any changes to that.

The video is on the OU website under college of nursing: RN to BSN Introduction | College of Nursing. I really hope it hasn't changed, because what you described was my understanding of the program until I watched this video. If you don't mind me asking, how are you liking the program? I am considering enrolling in the Fall. I have my ADN/RN in California and took many other classes as well, such as Nutrtion, Sociology, Stats, Physiology, Anatomy, Microbiology, Chemistry and Child development classes so I'm hoping I meet all of the pre-reqs even though I took all of them at a comunity college.

Thank you!

You might want to try to see if you can even get in. I am also in California and this is my second semester, but my friend just tried to apply and they told her they are no longer accepting students from California.

Yes. Because of the new requirements that involve some sort of "clinical project", they are only accepting students from Ohio and the surrounding states. Be sure to talk with someone at the school before you invest any more time. I am fairly happy with the program. It's busy, and a lot of work. But I don't expect them to just hand me a diploma for showing up. I like the 5 week class set-up, and enjoy being able to take 5 weeks off if needed between classes.

Wow, I read the web page refered to in mesa14's post. This looks nothing like the program I am in. The course numbers are really different. I wonder what's up.

Duh, now I feel stupid!

Hi,

I am currently enrolled and from California. I was accepted for Spring 2013 after a little delay as they figured out the Ohio BRN and CCNE accreditation requirements. Call the admissions office. A friend of mine from CA also got in at the same time.

I've been happy with the program so far. Yes, it is a lot of work and no, 100% online learning isn't for everyone. But having the five week sessions is great: they're over before you know it and you can take five weeks off if you're suddenly busy or overwhelmed.

Has anyone taken global health 101 at Ohio? It is a Tier II cross culture requirement.

There is a thread on that now.
