Is it possible to be born with two uteruses?

My son's girlfriend was having quite a bit of pain with her periods, and heavy bleeding. She went this morning for an ultrasound and the dr. told her she has two uteruses!! My first thought when I found this out was - surely she misunderstood? But my son insists this is what she told him.

Is this possible?? And if so, what kind of problems would this create if she wants to have children in the future? Supposedly, dr. told her she could actually carry a baby in each at the same time?:uhoh3:

I had a labor patient today who came in for labor eval with a uterus didelphys; we could see both cervices on speculum exam. Each cervix was 3-4 cm. and 80% effaced. I could feel the head through the septum as well. The septum seemed pretty shallow; I asked the OB how she thought the baby would be born. She said she thought the septum would get very thin and rupture, letting the baby come through both cervices. I'd never seen or felt anything quite like this before! When I left she was 6 cm. in both cervices (does that mean she's 12 cm?) :)

We recently had a pt with two uteri.

There is a very active Yahoo group for this:

"Support and information for those with müllerian anomalies of the uterus such as bicornuate, septate, unicornuate, hypoplastic and didelphys uteri."

I have what is known as a unicornuate uterus. Its similar to a septate uterus but only one half of the uterus is functional. The other half of the uterus is known as a rudimentary horn and is about the size of a thumbnail...so I actually have half a uterus. I also have only one kidney...this is fairly common with such uterine anomalies as the kidneys and mullerian ducts develop at the same time. I carried my first child with no trouble. She was breech, but my pregnancy was perfect in every other way. In fact, I had no idea there was anything different about me until I had my c-section. Unfortunately, my luck hasn't been the same since. I've had 2 miscarriages since. :crying2: I am so thankful to have my daughter and feel extremely fortunate that I had no problems while I was pregnant with her.

We had a pt with two uteruses, two cervix. She had a scheduled c/s, nice healthy baby, delivered a couple of weeks early. The second uterus was tucked away behind the one with the baby.

...whenI was in the Army in the 70s a gal I know had a really difficult time with her abortion. She had one lady parts and 2 uteruses...which of course was discovered during the procedure. This was before ultrasounds were used frequently. She recovered. I wondered if she ever had kids.

wow, how bizarre. :uhoh21: :uhoh21:

Can you let us know how that went? So far amkes sense...but how does the body recover from rupture of that septum? Will the cervix be able to close completely postpartum? Certainly an increase in PP bleeding (a little more than the 'usual' cervical tear) I suppose it depends on how complete the septum was- are there two separate muscular rings- one with tissure between or a combination. I suppose with these anomolies any degree of those is possible? Lots of 'supposing' going on over here! :chuckle Any correct answers? I suppose I'll read up and google when I have more time!

Has anyone ever seen a patient with 2 lady partss? I went to school with a woman who had formerly been an exotic dancer, and she claimed that she once danced at a club in which the #1 earning dancer had 2 lady partss. She described it as being side-by-side, one had a privy parts.
