Puerto Rico school feedback - thread #2

Published

Wow after 9 years and 1336 posts they closed our thread because it was too long.

The original thread and all the helpful posts can be found here:

https://allnurses.com/international-nursing/puerto-rico-school-28678.html

There are 134 pages in that thread but the last 130 pages were from 2010 and beyond and there is a ton of helpful info in there. Hopefully the current students will continue this thread as I graduate this month. Please try to read that thread at least a little bit before posting your questions here as it is very likely your question has been asked and answered on the other thread more than once.

Good luck on whatever path you choose!

Anyone have an info about the honors program?

Alright everyone, is set. I am going to Puerto Rico in May to explore the city and to find out what is going on with my still pending application. I have sent everything to school paper work wise and I will the school the whole month of April to reply to me( hopefully they do). At the same time I'll be going to look for a place to live and for a job... It's done I bought my airplane ticket already so I hope and pray to God that when I go down there I am able to take care of everything and settle for the August start date and to bless me with a job in nursing. If there is anyone on this thread who is currently living in Puerto Rico, I will appreciate any recommendations on what areas are good to rent near by the school. Also any nursing job or any job will be greatly and immense appreciate it.

Let me tell you all that I am exited and nervous and I feel that I am going to a limbo place of which I've never been before. Scary feeling since I have a family to support who are gonna stay in the main land until I settled well with a job and roof for them.

Help please!!!

Hey quik! I plan on coming in May too. You should PM me about the dates you will be there and maybe we can meet :)

Hehe, I will actually be there in May too. But obviously for different reasons. Stephanie you can find out about the honors program when you start. You don't have a Bachelors so you can for sure do it and if you maintain above a 3.9 which is easy at La Inter they pay your tuition. But it's all kind of hush hush for people with Bachelors degrees. When I started we didn't have anyone to tell us this stuff. But if people with Bachelors are reading this and you apply for the honors program do NOT say you have a Bachelors. They will not check. Only one person was turned away and that is because she said she had a Bachelors.

I don't even know if I should have posted all that. But quite honestly I am gone and my other friends are about to graduate AND I don't see why someone woudl mess it up for everyone.

Stephanie,

Sorry to answer so late!!

Okay so PR so far...in the beginning I was excited to be in a new place, get away, and do something that I love, nursing. Now...I'm literally counting down the days. I have 10 or 13 more months (the reason I am saying this is because I'm able to take Pediatrics during the summer-June- and we may or may not be able to graduate early) The BEST part of Puerto Rico is being able to explore the island. I can honestly say that I enjoy Puerto Rico because of the scenery, the beaches, the mountains, etc. School wise...I feel like I'm just ready to graduate and pass the NCLEX. There's just ALOT of things that goes on within the nursing department that forces you to constantly remind your self why your there... "I'm here because there is no waiting list, its cheap, and its accredited....REPEAT!" I don't want to scare anyone off, but if you have read the very first thread...the students are telling the TRUTH. Believe them!! LOL. The program is easy, just make sure you study-study-study. Buy the Saunders NCLEX Review book now...start reading (your going to end up reading the whole thing anyway before or after your done with school anyway)...I promise you, you will appreciate it later on.

Honors Program:

I talked to the Honors program director in December, he explained to me that students need a 3.4 GPA, 13 or 14 institution credits (if I remember correctly), and a letter from a club president (ex: Nursing Club or Intercultural club or Student Govt or Environmental club...etc). At the time I went to him, they didn't have any more slots open for the scholarship, so he told me to come back in May for Fall-Spring 2013/2014. You have to take an honors class once every other trimester....2 within a year basically. They have a list of classes your able to choose from--- I asked him for the list, he told me I will get that in May. (LOL. Smh) So thats that for the honors program. Things have changed apparently changed since Worldtravelingyogi was here.

This is for the person who asked where to send application info:

Ditto that. Can't say I miss it. It's worth it though.

Hola a todos! I have recently applied to the Accelerated Bachelor's of Nursing Program, and I am super excited! I have so much to think about and I am sure that I will be posting many questions here, despite already having learned so much from the wealth of knowledge already here! One of the important notes that I was wondering from current students or graduates is about the graduation rate. I read on the FAFSA website that the graduation rate of the university is only 24%. This means that only 24% of all the university students complete their degree within 150% of the time that the degree is supposed to require (ex. three years for a two year degree). This statistic is rather disturbing, and I need your opinions about this!

Does anyone have any idea why this number is so low? Is there any reason why I shouldn't be able to complete my two year accelearted bachelor's in that amount of time? The money is a HUGE factor for me, just like for all of you, I'm sure!

Thank you all in advance! Suerte!

COngrats on your decision to go with La Inter and to start in August. I know it's a bit scary but You can do this. I'm currently in the accelerated program on the island and we're in the middle of our trimester before summer break. Finding a job in nursing depends on how much Spanish you are fluent in as well as the availabity of a position. I'm still working on my spanish so that's not a possiblity to for me at the moment. But it is a future goal. I'm currently working on campus through work study - but if you want to earn more there are a few people I know working in Old San Juan as hostesses, etc.

In regards to living... there the La Cumbre area... which has a bunch of subdivisions with places to live.. If you go online to www[dot]clasificadosonline[dot]com - you can search for areas around cupey (which is where the school is. I ended up deciding to get a car and I live an 8 min drive away from school and an 8 min walk to the beach... (at the insistance of my flatmate at the time - but it actually worked out.. I enjoy the area).

hope you find some of that helpful

To be honest, i don't know the grad rate...but I wouldn't worry about that if you're a like minded individual who's gonna stay on track with your goals and graduate. I'm also in the accelerated program/honors...and I got here in Aug and I'm almost done with my first year (one more left!)... Money is a factor for me.. I'm on scholarships.. .so I have to get out of here pronto :)

all the best!

lol OMG you're not the only one counting down the days. I finish in July and I'm going straight back home!!

And visiting me.

1stSmile,

Thanks for the words of encouragement! It is exciting to hear from someone that is in my (potential), future shoes!

By the way, if I start up school in August and am looking to live in Las Cumbres, do you know when those rooms are up for rent? Will I always be able to find a place to live in las cumbres, or is it very competitive?
