Need Excelsior Clarification

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

I am trying to sort out the info for Excelsior & need a little help. Can I get study material from eBay, yahoo, etc & contact Pearson to schedule test dates prior to enrolling. Basically I am looking to do this for the core classes if possible. Also, do I have to pay the $190 (3 credit) $220 (4 credit) & $280 (6 credit) for each exam if I am not purchasing the guided learning material? Can someone please get me very clear cut answers to what I will be "required" to pay for other than the enrollment, application, student services, CPNE, grad fees? Thanks so much for helping me sort out all the options a little clearer! Have a blessed day.

Well I got them wrong. Only reason I said those two was because they were listed first and second in the content exams. rickt83 even said those were the ones she downloaded and since she is not enrolled yet ..I thought those were the ones..They all look the same to me.

No worries ... I had just posted that for someone on another board, and I thought it would be good to put here. It can get confusing! Especially when we're done with those!! LOL

Hello everyone:

I just wanted to give a reply to one of the posts I saw on here about downloading the content guides. I have submitted my application for Excelsior, but have not been evaluated yet. I am able to download all of the content guides for nursing. I am not sure why there seems to be a problem for some. Please let me know if you need help with finding them or else maybe I can email them over to you. BTW...my name is Heather and I am waiting for Excelsior to evaluate my nursing courses I have taken to see which will benefit me more...going to Excelsior or deciding to get back in to the program I just left (due to not making it through my 3rd semester). I hope and pray for each of you and will definitely keep in touch.

I am so, so, so sorry to anyone who reads my above post. I thought I was able to download the content guides that were needed for everyone that is starting Excelsior after October 2007. I was mistaken and I do apologize. I am actually only able to see and download the first two exam content guides, Health Safety and Health Differences. The others that I have must be from the old testing. Please forgive me if I mislead anyone.

Did you just enroll?? They added a new thing on there which is a focused clinical course. exactly what you are asking. That is something new

Also do you have any idea what the content guide names are for the 1 and 2 that I can download without enrolling. I cant seem to figure out what the titles are

rickt83 - you probably need to do the new courses - the first one is health and safety - yeah, then there's the new so called focused clinical course, which I understand you take online. I'm just starting - kicking myself for not enrolling last oct., so the new rules apply to me, and to you, too, no doubt. you can download the health and safety one before enrolling. pm me for excelsior details, as I am just beginning this stuff, too.

Hi Diahni, thanks for your reply. To clarify my question(s): #1: I wanted to see if I can get my LPN license before admission to excelsior so that "I" may work in the state of FL as an RN. Because FL does not allow excelsior graduate nurses to work in FL unless they are LPNs first.(Hopefully that makes some sense) #2: Excelsior accepted my admission regardless of FL laws, however I will have to be licensed elsewhere and the thing is I do not know how that process would work (do i have to move to another state? what state accepts my circumstances? ) i dunno. But i did speak to my school and they will place me in their LPN program without starting all over I just have to wait 'till they have an opening(yeah that's the bummer) and then after that I will continue my RN with the class I left off at, again if they have an opening :

P.S. I spoke with my school about challenging the LPN boards and of course I am not eligible because I have not taken "cardiac" which is part of their "med surg" course. But I am still truckin'

Hi,

I don't know the FLA laws about all this but I know a little about transferring to Exclesior and licensing. Okay, there might be some glitches because of flunking out. For starters, there are some states that let you test for the NCLEX if you have three semesters of an RN course behind you. Now, here's glitch number one - this policy was recently changed in the state of NY, so I couldn't do this now. I got my LPN by taking the nclex-pn while still a student so I could work while finishing up online. You have to do your homework to find a state like this - just remember that you can test for your LPN in any state, it doesn't matter where you live. The thing is that while it doesn't matter where you live, it does matter that each state has different rules and requirements. For instance, I think that Massachusetts requires more educational background to get a license. I discovered that even though I had my LPN from New York, when I applied to reciprocity in Massachusetts, I still had to qualify for the MA rules. (NY requires fewer clinical and class hours of an unfinished RN program, I believe.)

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking - you want to work while finishing your RN at Excelsior as an LPN? One glitch you might encounter is, in my case at least, I had to have left the RN program "in good standing" meaning of my own free will, and not because of flunking out. So I don't know where that puts you. I do have a friend who flunked out of an RN program after two semesters. He then took some special "bridge program" that allowed him to test for the LPN.

Is this helpful at all? OK, plan b might be for you to put all your energy into getting your RN at Excelsior. The only way you know where and if you can test for the LPN is to explore different states. I'm not sure what you meant by working as an LPN before admission. Does that mean admission to a school? I'm unclear. I think your job is to first figure out how you might test for the LPN. If it isn't possible, this doesn't stop you from pursuing your RN if you get accepted at Excelsior. I hope this helps. The part of all this I didn't know before applying for reciprocity in MA is that even though I already had my LPN in NY, MA has its own rules and reciprocity is not automatic.

Hope this helps you, and please ask more questions if you need to. It is a complicted bureaucracy, isn't it? Just remember if you really want to do it, you will! Everybody has setbacks. Persistence is the most important thing!

Wannabe - I guess it depends on the rn program you will be able to attend - had I gone to a program where I could stand the teachers, and I really couldn't, it might have been preferable to do a "real time" program. The way the license thing works is you can apply to any state you want - while you don't need to live there, the license will allow you to work in that state only. I tested for my NY license in Massachusetts. The Pearson Vue testing centers are everywhere. There's also the state nursing compact - though I don't know the details of reciprocity, or which states are members. Just always be sure to be clear what the rules are. Remember it's in Excelsior's interest to have you as a student. They want your money - if you can then be licensed in a particular state is not their concern. The state board of nursing will ultimately be the agency who decides if you can or can't be licenesed. Just keep that in mind!

Misty - better get it right from the horse's mouth - each state has its own regulations, and you want to make sure you know ohio's if that's where you want to work. While you're waiting for them to pick up the phone, doesn't Excelsior keep track of this stuff? Don't quote me, but I think only a few state make any special distinctions about the EC degree, like CA.

diahni

yes I guess I will be waiting, I left several messages and emails. so it will ge the waiting game for me. on EC website it clearly states to check with your own state.
