Nurses Job Hunt

Updated:   Published

I've been applying to as many jobs as I can. Probably averaging around 10-20 a day with individualized cover letters. I'm doing what I can on that end. I'm just making this post because I figured there might be a nurse manager on here wondering why the last nurse she hired wasn't what she thought they would be. Well, I'll be that nurse and more. So if you know that your hospital is looking for a motivated nurse for essentially any department (I'm most interested in Emergency and ICU) then please leave a comment with your hospital's website and I'll put my application in there too.

I'm an ADN student from CA and its been less than a month since I passed the NCLEX, but I feel as though only two phone interviews aren't enough. Any tips on how to become a better candidate? You can check my profile above for all of my background information if that helps.

I'm a great interviewer, I just need to get to that point. Any tips or job leads are appreciated! Who knows maybe someone else will see those tips and leads and get a position out of it if I don't. (Also I read the terms and didn't interpret any of them to make me feel like this type of post isn't allowed and if it is I apologize in advance)

Check out Advanced Hospitals | BSA Health System in Amarillo, TX and look under career opt. We have lots of job openings in most departments. Of course you would have to move to texas don't know if that is option or not but I am pretty sure you could get a job. Pm if you have any questions

Like the above poster said, if the market is tough in your area, move out and get experience elsewhere for a year if it's an option for you. There is always a bull market somewhere, even if it's out in the boonies. Also, don't be afraid of nursing homes/rehab centers. They are easier to get into and experience on a sub-acute unit is very similar to med-surg experience.

Two phone interviews really isn't bad for one month of searching as someone with no experience. At least you're getting something. Also, try calling up the unit managers on the units you applied for and stating your interest in their position. It's much more effective than calling HR.

Specializes in Vents, Telemetry, Home Care, Home infusion.

One of my phone interviews was for a position in Texas. I'm totally willing to relocate so I'll be applying to those jobs and I'll be sending you a PM too, thanks!

EDIT: Actually I don't have the required amount of posts to be able to PM you, but I will as soon as I am able to.

Posting on All Nurses just fishing for a job should be against TOS. There are hundreds/thousands of new grads looking for jobs and if all of them posted their desire for a job as the only point of their post this site would just be useless spam.

You seem like a very nice hard-working person but I feel like I've been scammed into reading a thinly veiled job application. Your avatar also adds to that impression. Though the title of this post clearly cuts to the chase I thought there would be a bit more substance.

Good luck to you.

Thank you for the 'warm' wishes, however, is there any advice or tips that you may be able to offer that could help me in the job hunt (other than not to post here)? This is in the "Nursing First Job Hunt Assistance" section after all.

You are absolutely right. I am just saying it felt weird to read a post that is just a call out for a job. I don't think that is the intention of this section. It's more along the lines of how do I find a job not "give me a job". If everybody posted their desire for a job here this would turn into a job board so there must be some reason they are not doing so. Your post could be interpreted as a "solicitation" and would be against TOS.

I didn't notice the "Nursing First Job Hunt Assistance" title because I was looking under the "Popular" tab.

There are numerous threads about job-hunting tips and advice, so I won't clutter up the net any further.

Good luck on your Job Search.

Thank you for sharing with me your views. I will refrain from posting any new topics like this one as I do respect your opinion and do not wish to break any of the TOS of this site.

Many hospitals aren't hiring as many new grads now. The SoCal job market is flooded with them so hospitals have their pick of several hundred candidates for just a few jobs.

Are you in school for BSN? That can make you more marketable as Magnet hospitals look for BSN over ADN.

Did you volunteer, work, or do your preceptorship in a hospital? Did you make a good impression there? If so, did you apply there? Will anyone speak up for you at a facility that hires new grads?

Although it's great that you want to work ER or ICU, so do many others. What makes you stand out in a sea of faces & resumes? Consider starting out in med-surg, then moving onto a specialty area afterwards. Consider working at a smaller facility.

Are you willing to relocate to Texas? If so, PM me. I know of some job opportunities for new graduates.

you don't need to relocate, yet. get out of that chair and start networking, going to job fairs, volunteering... etc. you don't need a BSN, if you make the right connections. TRUST ME on this one. i live in los angeles. 50% of the nurses on my floor are new graduates. half them are ADN/ASN. get all the certifications you can at this time... they may or may not help.
