Now I'm 3 days out from taking my NCLEX so am totally stressed! Now I go to the link my employeer sends me to fill out the criminal background check info, and happen to see it includes a credit check! We just filed for bankruptcy protection in April and go to court in August, as we're looking forward to turning a new leaf in life with me having a secure and steady income now. As hubby has been self employeed while I've been in school. Does anyone think I will lose my job offer now? I'm ready to cry!!!

No way to know for sure. You should call the employer and ask about it. When I accepted my last job they ran a background check that included a credit check as part of it, but the HR women told me they only use the background check.

I'm sorry you're experiencing this stress. Credit checks have been used in the hiring process in many industries for some time now. I've had my credit checked for every job I've held since the late 80s.

However, the value to the employer of an inexpensive credit check is that it provides a cheap, concise way to verify information you have listed on your employment application -- previous jobs held, previous addresses, etc. As far as how much attention they will pay to financial details ... this varies greatly from employer to employer. You'll have to decide whether or not to allow this check to be run (if you haven't already), and plan for all possible consequences.

See according to what has been handed down. Your credit to an employer tells them the type of employee you may be. It's all crap and it's a way for Corporate America to violate your private life. Why do i say this.. Well what if your husband had an Illness and it effected your credit. Well to them your a risk no matter what.

Same with auto insurance a poor credit score to them means you might cost them money because according to their study people with bad credit or questionable credit according to them is more likely to get in to or cause an accident you think I'm kidding about this look it up.

I hope this doesn't effect your job or getting a job. They think and feel if you have poor or bad credit you are likely to get in to Medication trouble either by dealing the med's or stealing or even taking them yourself. They feel if you have money problems and a bad credit score means you have money problems or poor money management you can't make the bills and you will do anything to fix it even lie cheat or steal from an employer.

This is what the world is coming to. I hope you get your job and everything is ok. I myself hate doing credit reports for jobs i think and feel it's none of their business.. I wish you luck..., Anthony

I'm not sure that you would loose your job offer, but usually the reason why hospitals and companies, or any major firm for that matter, would want a credit check would be to see if you have major debt (like, tens of thousands of dollars or more). You're seen as an liability, and more likely to do something risky with a substantial amount of debt in your name... for example, if you happen to be assigned to a "special" patient in that hospital (let's go above and beyond and say the president), then the hospital would see you as more likely to share his/her info with those who ask for it in exchange for monetary things (like newspapers, newpersons, etc.)

For example, the Armed services actually do background checks for individuals applying for security clearances for that sole purpose (someone could ask for gov't information in exchange for money, and it's actually appealing to those who are in debt), thus they would not even be considered for a clearance.

I'm sure you understand this, and I know it doesn't answer your question, but I don't think that bankruptcy would be an issue though, since you erased whatever was on ur report from filing... but then again, you can never be sure.

A while back I was in the middle of a major credit meltdown when I applied for a job and I asked them outright if it mattered. They said they don't usually check that, they usually just have it on the form so that they reserve the right to if need be. But they also said they don't really care that much about my credit, and I had no problems about it -- other than that I hated the job.

I've never encountered any problems since, and have held numerous jobs, either through agency or full-time with facilities,no one has ever checked, and if they have, it didn't affect my job application.

I have worked with soooo many people with credit problems, it's a fact of life in these times, even have fielded collection agency and attorney calls at work for co-workers, we are ALL hurting. I wouldn't worry too much about it. They aren't going to do a check anyway until after they talk to you and decide to extend an offer. Make a good impression, that is what counts.

i have no clue if this will affect your job. I really hope not. My credit is not good at all. One of the reasons im so excited to start my Career is to finally fix my credit. Nursing is my 2nd degree so I have many many student loans which has killed my credit along with the horrible ecomony. I really hope it doesnt affect any of us trying to start our Nursing careers. good luck

It didn't have an affect on me and they did a credit check also.. Yes, we also filed for bankruptcy..

This is not exactly true. As a matter of fact, you're considered more hirable with bad credit and a really good explanation before and during the interim investigation, than if you had/have a bankruptcy. Way back when I received my security clearance I had some unpaid bills, etc and had no problem receiving it. I had to explain everything thoroughly, though...

Okay... With my husband currently being MI in the Army (with a TS clearance), he was explaining it to me, and he even gives them out, and that was his explanation. That is a factor, though, so saying that it's the only factor perhaps may be an overstatement.

and again, it's with individuals who are in tons and tons of debt... a few unpaid bills and such would not be an issue, as that is quite common.

To be honest declaring bankruptcy may work in your favor because now they know your really desperate for money. I had a supervisor tell me "I like to hire nurses that have to make car payments because I know they can't quit" All they really care about is the IRS because they can garnish your wages and you may leave and go somewhere else.
