poor man's dignity

its in the news everyday!surgeons and OR staff celebrating for their ludicrous achievement....

1.invasion of privacy 2.patients rights.3. code of ethics etc (pls add some more), these are some of the issues that doctors and nurses (from now infamous Vicente sotto hospital in cebu) violated. that put the victim into a great emotional distress.my husband and i were so thawrted from the hospital's admin when we heared that the surgeons and others who were involved will more or less only have administrative case.

one of the priests even wnts to procecute the victim. the real issue here is the foolishness of the surgeons and nurses but not his sexual orientation!

downloading the video for the youtube only added insult to the injury but somehow it helped to nail down and pressure even more the staff of the VCMH. what i want personally...for them is to revocation of their licenses and not suspension from work.(i hope surgeons will not shift into nursing)

the nurses and doctors saved the poor man's health but they killed him from humiliation and stripping his dignity.

what can you say?

Lawrence,

I have to agree with you on this one. It has nothing to do with sexual orientation at all, but the fact that the staff in the OR filmed this and then posted it.

In the US, they would be without a job rather quickly and suspended immediately from any facility and more than likely lose their license.

But consider this, the people that did this mean and disgusting thing, will never be able to work outside of your country. They will never be able to get a visa to work anyplace else.

And do hope that they are quite proud of what they did, and they will have to live with it, and hope that they get the same treatment as well.

They are disgusting and not a good thing to say about any of them and I do hope that they lose their licenses and their jobs.

i have to chime in on this one.

the patient was a victim.

it started with

video scandal grips cebu hospital

the can was inserted by a man he had casual sex with last new year's eve. danilo said he was asleep when it happened.

the patient was drunk.

then

doctors, nurses probed for making fun of patient in video

the video, taken last january 3, was of a male patient who was undergoing an operation at the vicente sotto memorial medical center (vsmmc) to take out a perfume canister that had been inserted into his rectum by a male sex partner on new year's eve.

the video ran for at least two minutes and 28 seconds and showed how the operating team of more than 10 people extracted the canned body spray from the patient's rectum as some laughed and cheered when the "baby" was pulled out. the video is no longer available on youtube.

i would like to point out the sad state of reporting in our country: the writer thinks a "perfume canister" is synonymous with a "canned body spray."

search "vicente sotto memorial hospital scandal" on youtube to check out the videos--yes, there was a roomful of nincompoops during the surgery...and it was a big can of spray, not a perfume canister.

then

doh probes rectal surgery on youtube

with all the fire and brimstone talk...the doh head was quoted that the involved professionals' identities should be protected.

then

new video shows faces

the new posting, dubbed "cebu black suede scandal response," also showed the face of a young man who was identified as the one who allegedly uploaded the original video of the surgery.

. . .

youtube users use code names, making identities hard to verify or trace.

in the video information page, tamilok13 explained that his video was in response to the original video posted by "joarcfranz," which contained more details.

so the code name of the original uploader is joarcfranz. should be easy enough to trace who should be stripped of his license first, or who should be kicked out of nursing school.

then

doh names docs, nurses in cebu 'canister scandal'

secretary francisco duque iii identified the vsmmc medical staff as head surgeon philips leo arias; assistant surgeons angelo linawagan and max joseph montecillo; nursing attendant rosemarie villareal; and circulating nurse carmina sapio.

now it seems the professionals' being presumed "innocent until proven guilty" right lasts only a day or two in the philippines.

then

danilo files complaint against 3 docs, nurse

there were news articles that the "head surgeon" was only a resident doctor, and that his mother insisted on his innocence, and will be bringing a lawyer into the fray.

i think this "head surgeon" is one of the guiltiest, but there were more culpable ones in the room--namely, the consultants (attendings) who i presume were in the room during the operation.

this was a celebrated case in a government hospital--it would have been discussed with the consultants pre-op, and i think more than a few consultants would be observing the operation on the basis of the x-rays alone.

i think the consultants should have their licenses revoked--they are the gods in the operating room.

if there really were no consultants, then the head surgeon and the other nurses ("uzis" or rubberneckers) should be included in the investigation.

the student nurses and their clinical instructor (ci) should be investigated too.

i feel the ci should lose his/her license.

i am aghast at what happened here.

(this is why i used to prohibit my students from taking out their cellphones while they were officially on duty. now i think they will understand my reasons.)

it was also in the news that they will not be suspended from their work because the hospital is understaff..

I just hope that the Head Surgeon gets the brunt of all possible charges, and including possible revocation of his license using the Captain of the Ship doctrine. There should be no way out for him since it is clearly Res Ipsa Liquitor (the thing speaks for itself).

If he were a responsible Head Surgeon then this shouldn't have happened at all in the first place.

I agree!

'Hold instructor of student nurse in rectum scandal accountable'

DUMAGUETE CITY - The chair of the Technical Committee on Nursing Education of Commission on Higher Education (CHED) suggested to revoke the license of the Clinical Instructor (CI) of the student nurse who took a cell phone video of the rectum operation in Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu.

ABS-CBN Regional Network said Dr. Maria Teresita Cinda, the chairwoman of Technical Committee on Nursing Education of CHED, condemned the acts of the CI.

"The CI should look after his students inside the operating room," said Cinda, who is also a dean of the College of Nursing in Silliman University.

She said that the CI is responsible for the acts of his students in any clinical area in the hospital. It is the CI's license which is on the line in case students make mistakes.

The video, which was uploaded in Youtube, showed surgeons retrieving a perfume canister from the patient's rectum. The attending staff was reportedly heard laughing during their patient's ordeal.

The video was uploaded by a student nurse who was present during the sensitive operation. Cinda recommended a disciplinary action by the school for the student nurse.

Cinda said nursing schools should always remind their students regarding medical ethics to avoid what happened in Cebu. She added that nursing students should uphold the patient's right to privacy.

"Any documentation of an operation should be with patient's consent," Cinda explained.

Negros oriental upgrades hospital policy

Meanwhile, Provincial Health Office in Negros Oriental issued a policy upgrade for government hospitals.

The upgraded policies are:

  • taking of photo/videos of patient by hospital personnel, trainees, interns, volunteers, and media inside the hospital are strictly prohibited unless there is a written consent from the patient duly approved by the provincial health officer-1 or -2;
  • hospital personnel should maintain decorum inside the hospital premises at all times, to include proper dress code, and they should speak softly in modulated voices;
  • sanctions will be imposed on medical and media personnel who will be found violating the policies.

Negros Oriental Department of Health chief, Socrates Villamor hopes that the canister scandal in Cebu would not happen in Negros Oriental.

Sorry, but screw the facility. If this were their family member that was filmed, you can be sure that heads would be rolling. And if there are so many nurses that cannot find jobs, then why are they considered short-staffed? And if these pictures were taken by a student nurse, they should not be ever permitted to get a license in any country, they are not deserving of it and should not be permitted to continue in their program, nor should the CI be ever permitted to teach again, nor ever be able to work in another country, and I mean ever.

And if the licenses are pulled by the government, then the facility will have no choice but to remove them from their positions.

The nice thing now is that their names have been published all over the world, so they will never be able to get a license out of your country and this is exactly what they deserve. Have no respect for them whatsoever, and they have made it bad for any others from your country if they are not removed from their positions and lose their licenses over this.

And restitution needs to be made to the patient.

they cant remove those who were involved maybe because of their political status. i agree with suzzane once the PRC rovoked their licenses...hopefully, they have no excuse tto stay at the hospital.

Indeed, maybe true, I have no idea. Perhaps others here who know them or maybe their neighbors could share some info to us here.

As nurses, we should be the first one to protect our patient's privacy, one of the patient's basic rights. We should always act as patient's advocate and ensure that all members of the healthcare team are aware of these rights. I strongly suggest that desciplinary measures are imposed to all persons involved.

To make it simpler for some of you to understand:

If the facility does not remove these low-lifes and that is the nicest word that I can think of to use about them, then they are going to make it difficult for each and every one of you in the future. Others read and follow and if these jerks are not disciplined, you will see more and more things like this appearing from other facilities as well.

Starting from the nursing student that was dumb enough to even take her cell phone into the OR and had the nerve to film this, up to the senior physicians in the OR, as well as the consultants that were responsible for their actions, should be removed from their jobs. And this nursing student definitely needs to be removed from their program and never permitted to work in field ever.

This is no second chance for her. And since she was there under the license of the CI, they need to be fired as well from their position as a clinical instructor.

Sorry, for sounding so harsh, but this is the same treatment that they would receive anywhere else and if your country does not step up to what they should be doing, then they need to deal with the consequences and they will be harsh from others. Any country has the right to put a hiring freeze in place, and they can.

To make it more serious, I'd also suggest closure of that hospital by the DOH(Dept. of Health) for their failure.

well said, ms, suzanne!!:yelclap:

if i was in the student's place i would have a quiet chuckle myself.

i won't film the procedure. and most of all...

I WON'T POST IT IN THE NET, MUCH LESS ON YOUTUBE, FER CHRISSAKES'!

i've seen much absurd cases than this one and all of the staff involved had quite a few laughs, but it never gets out of the OR.

this is petty stupidity at its finest.

post on youtube so that you can share a few laughs and shout to the world: hey lookee what i got here!:yeah:

better do this::banghead:

this is clear evidence that health care here is not up to par. AND THEY WANT TO PROMOTE MEDICAL TOURISM?

i was reminded of the old joke bout the soviet union when we were musing about the health services standard here. and the joke goes:

AS LONG AS THEY PRETEND TO PAY US, WE WILL PRETEND TO WORK.:D
