CABON Now Requires SSN to apply for NCLEX.

Effective on April 26, 2010 California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) will no longer accept applications that do not contain a U.S. Social Security Number. The Nursing Practice Act provides for a unified examination and licensing application. Once an applicant passes the examination, a license is automatically issued. Under these circumstances the BRN cannot accept applications for the examination and licensure without a U.S. social security number.

For those applicants who have failed the exam and want to re-apply; CABON will not accept re-application without U.S Social Security Number.

If your application was sent prior to April 26, 2010 or if you are already eligible, THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU.

Yup, i used iTIN also before. After my petition came out, i sent them my SSN and finally changed it. Otherwise, you wont be able to renew your license.

Not everyone will meet ITIN requirements

i verified this with CA BON 5-6 times via phone and email for my friends back in the philippines and they told me the same thing: only an SSN will be accepted. after 2 years of passing and you can't supply them with an SSN, your files will be destroyed and you will have to re-apply. from giving them the papers from your dean, etc and if you still don't have an ssn before you re-apply your application will not be accepted.

hi indorx,

when you replied to the CaBON that ur going to use ur ITIN instead of SSN, did u ask them first by mail? or u sent ur ITIN with ur letter right away? thanks! hope to hear from u!

Not only that but the legal department of Consumer Affairs for the State of California (the Board of Registered Nursing is under that department) has determined that an ITIN is not a valid replacement for an SSN and therefore will not be accepted any more.

I dont know what the new updates now, but its true that not all are legible to get iTINs. I got mine way back yr2000 when i first visited the US. I was not a nurse back then. When i came back 2008 and took the NCLEX exam which i did pass. I used my iTIN as my number to get the License. It was suggested to me by my lawyer, and i did confirm with the Ca BON. After my petition came out, i was entitled to get my SSn which i submitted in replacement of my iTIN number. There are alot of changes in the past 2 years, more and more nursing students here in the US might have been one of the cause that BONs are becoming more strict. But keep your heads up.

When you re apply does it mean that you have to sit for another NCLEX-RN exam again? I emailed them and I got this reeponse " As of today's date, we will retain exam results and they will not be

destroyed. Once you have obtained a U.S. Social Security Number

(SSN) and wish to reapply at a later date, you would need to submit

only application requirements."

They did not answer me directly. From what I understand I just need to submit all the documents again, minus taking the exam again.

I really need help on this matter.

hello guyz.. thanks for all the info you've posted...I passed NCLEX-RN last 2008.

Is it true that we don't have to resit for NCLEX-RN even though our files in California BON has been destroyed (after 3 years)? thanks! :)

VSC is valid for 5 years and if you have to renew it your IELTS or English exam has to be redone as it needs to be current and valid
