Since nursing practice differs in the US, most organizations will consider you a "new grad" in terms of nursing experience. Although Houston is very diverse, you are competing with the tons of new grads for entry level jobs in local hospitals. I would encourage you to focus on smaller, independent hospitals in the area rather than the big systems. They have much more flexible employment practices.

Here's another thought. Since I assume you are multi-lingual, have you considered obtaining certification as a medical interpreter? The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) This is a regulatory requirement now for non-English speaking patient care. It would be a real bonus for potential employers.

Just start applying. Most places have an online application process. The first RN job can take 6-12 months to find, so apply everywhere.

i do not know much about immigration, I will admit. If you require sponsorship you will have a very hard time, that much I know. There are a lot of American born nurses having trouble finding work, making paying for visa sponsorship both unnecessary and unattractive to employers.

I wish you good luck in your search!

I am a permanent resident here. I have a green card so I don't require sponsorship

Some hospitals don't consider experience outside the US, so they might consider you as new grad. BUT, there are some who do. It doesn't matter if it is a hospital or rehab or nursing home. Just keep on applying.

Apply for everything, new grad positions and experienced positions: your 1 year of experience in Pakistan may count as experience in some settings, so just apply to all of them.

The job market in the US is saturated right now in most areas. Apply at all the hospitals, nursing homes. rehab, clinics. Many doctors offices do not hire RN's. They use medical assistants. They are cheaper. Empasize you are bi-lingual.

    Welcome to the US...good luck!
