graduated in dec 12 and still no hospital job-nyc area :(

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I'm not such a new grad anymore. I graduated last December 2012 from an accelerated program bsn program and I have had no luck finding a hospital job yet. I didn't have much of a work history before did my undergrad degree in business and jumped straight into nursing. I got my license this February and took a job at some agency to basically do paperwork but was required to be an RN. That ended in June and I was offered an rn manager position almost a week after my assignment ended. But while working ive been applying to places like crazy. I live in the nyc area and it is a tough market for inexperienced nurses. I'm starting to lose hope that I will never get a hospital job. I think new nurses need that hospital experience for at least a couple of years. I was a good student too almost 3.8 gpa and I had letters of recommendations from two clinical instructors but nothing has happened yet. I've been invited to two group interviews but so many people attended that I assumed I didn't make a big enough impression since nothing happened from it. Esp since one wasn't specific to new grads and a lot of experienced nurses attended. I feel that taking these jobs were a mistake, even though I get paid as an rn I don't have an interest in the job im in. Now Ive worked as an RN case manager for 5 months and ive started to get calls about doing homecare and other case management positions. Should I leave my current job for possibly a more hands on position in homecare or should I wait it out for at least a year? I want to end up in a hospital so im not sure if taking a position im not interested in will be of any benefit to me. But then again Im not sure being in this position will help me get a clinical hospital job just case manager jobs. Im just so confused and unhappy right now since most of my friends have hospital jobs now and I can't even talk to them abut how I feel. Plus I volunteer. Im not sure what im doing wrong.....:nurse:

Mind sharing the job/agency you took ?

Im a new grad in NY, and cant even get an interview.

Something that sets me up for management down the road is something that is incredibly interesting to me (I have a prior MBA from before I went into nursing) so your situation seems incredibly appealing to me

Thanks a ton !

I think if you want a hospital job and aren't getting them in your area then it might be time to expand your search. Some areas are just impossible to get new grad positions in but if you are will to be flexible and look in other cities or states then I am confident you could get a position. And once you get your first 1-2 years of experience you can get a job anywhere!

P.S. Even if it isn't your dream job, be glad you have an RN position :)

Its NY, the whole state is crap for nursing atm.

I graduated in May from a BSN program, and over half my program hasnt even gotten interviews yet anywhere.

Several of the major hospitals have hiring freezes due to the Obamacare changes, its tough out here

It is tough! I also graduated in May and sent out at least 30 applications to 10+ hospitals before getting an interview. Luckily, I was hired at Duke after that interview :) Just keep applying and don't get discouraged! I would recommend opening your search range though because I know of people who waited a whole year after graduating to make the decision to relocate and that's a lot of time to be missing out on paychecks.

NYC area only? You need an incredible amount of luck to land a job in the hospital, worse yet you've been hired already so that "new grad" title is off the table. If I had one choice of the other, I'd do the home care. In an ideal world I'd keep the safe job (Case manager) and per diem home care until you know the home care job is going to be stable.

I've heard Pennsylvania, North Dakota, Florida are looking for nurses. Moving out of state is probably your best bet!

Specializes in GYN/Med-Surg.

I'm in Florida. New grad RN job prospects here where I am are grim (Tampa Bay area). Very grim. But I don't know about other areas of Florida.

I'm in PA and graduated August and still no luck finding my first RN position

I live in Florida too, to many nursing schools and graduates not enough open positions available.

Specializes in Critical Care; Cardiac; Professional Development.

Yeah, never ever listen to chatter on a nursing board about areas being hungry for new grads without doing some real research. Usually it is unfounded. More than one person has (bafflingly) made an out of state move without a job lined up based on what they have read here and found themselves to have landed in an even worse situation and now without family or friends nearby and no connections into the medical community. This board does not constitute adequate research.
