How would you react to a nurse telling you (the DON/DNS) what is wrong with the facility and what needs to change within the resignation letter?

I guess it would depend on the content- If it was an "I regretfully resign, due to (example) unsafe staffing ratios and feel that the management should be made aware of the following issues so that they may address them..." VERSUS the "All of the management here are a bunch of meanie-doody heads with bad body odor.."

I would think about what was said and take it to heart if the criticism is truly constructive and not just a diatribe about how crappy everything and everybody is.

It depends on how it was written. If it was written as an expression of constructive criticism, then it should be taken as it is. Hopefully that will also serve as an eye-opener for the management to do something about its facility.

I am guessing that your resigned employee did not feel confident that there would be an exit interview but felt strongly that management should know the reasons anyway.

I would read it with interest and then consider how valuable or pertinent the comments were and decide whether or not a follow up with that person might be in order.

I recently resigned from a facility because it was such a toxic atmosphere filled will low morale, favoritism and backbiting, not to mention some nurses trying to always get other nurses in trouble. Instead of working togethther some worked against each other. So I stated on my resignation that i was leaving for personal reasons. Management was so cold and heartless; there wasn't a word said to me from the DON, administrator, human resources or any other from management. I know they lost a good and compassionate nurse who treated everyone with respect. There is a low retention of nurses and it will stay that way until management shows a good example of caring.

Meaningful feedback on the employee's experience can be enlightening. The feedback mechanism works well in an exit interview.
