choosing a specialty and personality type?

I too, have tested as an INFP. I have had a strong interest in MBTI/typology. I have been working in private duty for most of my nursing career (which is short) and have enjoyed it so far. Would LOVE to get into psych, behavioral health, or community health. Still trying to find the best way to break in. If any of you are interested there is an "INFP" forum (all types are welcome) called: infpglobalchatter.com (just google it if it doesn't load). I have read a few posts on there about nurses who are also INFP's.

I've always been interested in this type of stuff! =) I took the Humanmetrics test awhile back and scored "INFJ" twice, but then a few months later took a similar test on Facebook and got "INFP". . .twice. I have no doubt about the first three letters, but I always had trouble deciding between "J" and "P". I didn't think it possible to be both! So I did further research and read personality descriptions in the books "Do what You Are" and "The Pathfinder." It was then that I realized I was more of an "INFP." Your post further confirmed my personality type because whenever people ask me what specialties I am interested in, I always tell them "Psych and Oncology"!

I graduated this year from nursing school (Class of '09!!), but I struggled with my career decision early on because I didn't want to go to ICU, ER, or Med-Surg like everyone else. I thought I didn't belong in nursing...later on I realized there is a place for everyone. We INFP's are rare, and it's nice to know that I'm not the only INFP in the nursing field

I am an INFJ, I have took a Myers-Briggs test about 5yrs ago and was a borderline extroverted ENFJ. At this point, I am probably more introverted. I currently work, on a Neurosciences (Neurology/Neurosurgery) floor. I have previously had ICU expereince in school (loved it! the complexity, and intensity, 1:1 was great) and I have an interest in Emergency nursing with a tiny bit of experience (I like the adrenaline rush and trying to save the level 1 Trauma.) But I have only been an RN for 1 1/2 yrs, and am still trying to find certainty in my niche. I really am getting tired of the floor, and would like to specialize. I feel the floor will burn me out, and I have on many occasions considered a totally career change: like becoming an elementary school teacher.
I don't like the pt. juggling on the floor with a very heavy assignment, I sometimes feel that I cannot give them the care that I would expect/want to, and some families are so demanding/mean, very nonappreciate and want everything NOW! And you may have to put up with them for awhile....making feel like I am back in my waitressing days. Which I got really sick of fast, that's why I went to nursing school. Ironic.
So I am actually contemplating OR nursing, probably the opposite of a counsellor idealist. But maybe I would make a good mediator for the strong personalities in the OR I'm still giving it time. Other then L & D, where are all the INFJs?

I love MBTI! I'm an INFJ as well. However, a couple of times when testing in my work mindset, I've tested as an INTJ. But, I'm definitely INFJ at the core.

I'll soon be starting my nursing career in the Cardiothoracic SICU. I desired ICU prior to starting nursing school and thoroughly enjoyed my time in the ICU while in school. Hope that will continue while working as an RN.

INFP... And honestly, almost ALL nursing jobs do not match personality type. Seriously NONE. My extreme "intuitive" and strong "perceiving" parts make me dislike the routine practicality in nursing. I love patient interaction but I honestly don't like hand-on routine stuff.

The only thing that can be a potential match is psychiatry.

I think where I would fit most is psych nursing, not as staff, but possibly as an advanced practice nursing. But regardless, I think psych RN is probably a good match for me than other personality type.

Ironically, now I am in pharmacy school. Pharmacy jobs are even more structured!! I am hoping to get into teaching or specialized in psychiatric pharmacy so it can be as close to my INFP match as possible.

I am still thinking about changing my path to psych CNS or psychology................. anyway... got to back to studying for final on Monday.. and then I can think about my future later on.
