Magnet curse!

Nurses Professionalism

Published

Anyone else work at a Magnet hospital where shortly after you got magnet accreditation the work environment/morale went downhill? We got magnet in 2011 and currently it is not a good place to work! Lots of turnover, travel nurses, etc. on my unit we are required to get our CCRN within two years (which will be over by the end of this year!!) or they say they will post our jobs (if we haven't gotten it yet). These are just a few examples. I was wondering if this has happened elsewhere.

Lol last week my mom took her brother in for surgery and was asking the RN at the hospital if the hospital has "magic status." So yea, I'd agree that patients and family don't know what it is!!!! I'm sure the nurse thought she was nuts.[/quote']

Bwahahaha!!!!

I was just told today by the magnet hospital that the reason that they cannot rehire me is because they don't currently have enough BSN nurses to maintain magnet status.

They thought that their older adn nurses would retire---didn't happen. And then they'd be able to fill those spots with BSN grads.

Instead the BSN grads came in, worked for a year, and then leave to go to the more prestigious university hospitals.

So here I am begging for a job, currently enrolled in an RN to BSN program and won't be hired simply because the hospital can't check off the box on the magnet paperwork that I have a BSN.

This reminds me a bit about when hospitals started phasing out LPNs in the 80s in the city where I lived, thinking that as they retired they'd be replaced with RNs. One of my jobs at the time was as faculty in a community college teaching nursing; our administration forged an alliance with one of the big hospitals in town to give their LPNs a free associate's degree so they could be RNs, and guaranteed them jobs when they finished. Sounds great, huh?

Well, a lot of them really hated it, didn't see what difference it would make, and didn't want to be better educated in nursing (there's really no better way to describe that, no matter how politically-incorrect). They would tell me, " I don't want the responsibility (of being an RN)." Some loved the classes, were thrilled for the opportunity, and we loved teaching them; some were truculent, resentful ... and out of a job because they could not/would not see the writing on the wall.

That's such a load of crap. I'm not opposed to obtaining my bsn. I'm opposed to spending $20-24k to do it. I'm opposed to being forced to do it. I'm VERY opposed to being bullied and threatened in order to get me to comply.

Do you have tuition reimbursement where you work?

I work for a Magnet Hospital and LOVE it! We were voted top 10 best places to work in the nation. They treat us well and are a very close team! I have great benefits also!

I looked it up! That's very good you have a good work environment. Many are not so fortunate.

I worked for my hospital for...gosh, five or six years prior to Magnet achievement. I feel like now that we have the status the level of bull crap has increased exponentially, but NOT the working conditions. I will continue to work there but it has NOTHING to do with magnet.

Hey, its not $20K. I am just finishing up with for a mere $7K, max would be $11K. The information is valuable, current and timely (redundant). It might make one a more open minded nurse. It is doing that for me.

I'm also using wgu. By far the cheapest I have found. Plus you move at your own pace so if it's expensive, you have no one to blame but yourself.

I work at a magnet facility but feel like our recent changes (hiring BSN new grads as opposed to RNs with experience), and some staffing cuts as well as just not hiring for positions and "making do" with what we have has been more about the crappy economy and saving dollars. Magnet has done nothing for our morale, that remains collectively in the toilet..

It's 20k if you need as many general education credits as I need. Just the nursing credits are $12k. I'm looking into WGU. I'll probably go that route. Unless they also tell me that I need 15-20 credits of general education and humanities electives. If that happens, I'll start working on testing out of every one I can using Thomas Edison State College.

(I took only what was exactly needed for my AAScN. I have the bare minimum of general education & humanities. I need another English, another psychology, chemistry, 2 more humanities electives.)

What do you mean re-hire you? Did you quit and then go back? Are they requiring ADN's to get their BSN?

I worked for the hospital for 3 years then transferred within the same healthcare system to an internal med clinic. Now I want to go back to the hospital.

Nurse G, Can I ask where you work? Sounds like our facility!
