Forced ultrasounds

Nurses Activism

Has anyone been following this? Virginia just passed a law that requires any woman who wishes an abortion must have an ultrasound (and pay for it) prior to the abortion. Since most of these are done prior to 12 weeks that means the ultrasound will most likely be lady partsl. Does any one else have a problem with this? I know that the abortion would also be lady partsl but this is an unnecessary procedure. What is the medical purpose here? Obviously none. Here's a few links covering the story. I was disappointed I couldn't find any public comments from nursing organizations.

Conscious Sedation is relatively easy, cheap and safe with properly trained personnel. We often do it at the bedside for PTs getting a bone marrow biopsy or for LPs.

I believe for my niece's wisdom teeth removal it cost all of $100, while local would have been $40. Either way, it was cheaper than a transvag US.

I was 7w5d from my LPM when I had an abortion. An ABD u/s was used, and the technician had zero problems with finding and examining the pregnancy before the physician came in to view it as well.

The provider I used offered abortions at 4+ weeks, or as early as a pregnancy can be visualized via u/s technology. At such early gestations a trans vag u/s is necessary, but again, we should leave these decisions to the health care professionals.

These wingnuts in Virginia must have sorted out the local economy, poverty, and crime to be infiltrating on Women's Rights. Simply put, "My Body, My Right"

The abortion clinic, then should do this prior to the procedure.

What would the medical reason be for doing this? It appears to me to basically be a variation on a "poll tax".

This is just another case of the religious right trying to give their narrow, absolutists and distorted interpretation of religious dogma the full weight and force of law. They fail to appreciate the irony, let alone the hypocrisy then, of claiming their religious freedoms are being infringed upon by rules giving women the same access to contraception men have to medication for erectile dysfunction. Perhaps men, especially politicians trying to restrict women's access to contraception and safe...legal abortion, should undergo a cystoscopy before getting their prescription. And yes, I'm a man.

To determine gestational age because if it's past a certain amount of time it's illegal to perform an elective abortion.

The ultrasound must be by lady partsl probe, not a pelvic ultrasound, as per the law. The lady partsl probe ultrasound would be mandatory before an abortion - meaning that if the patient doesn't consent to the lady partsl probe, they can't get an abortion in Virginia.

Some of those morons in VA are now claiming they "Didn't know" what a translady partsl ultrasound was. However, during the discussions of the bill, a Democratic member of the legislature, who is an MD, explained it fully.

Maybe the VA politicians should be required to have a trans-rectal ultrasound prior to voting on the legislation.

I always thought we used the least invasive intervention in all procedures , so it is perfectly legitimate to assess the gestational age of the fetus , but by mandating by law the translady partsl US , listening to the fetal heartbeat etc. is bordering upon rape and torture .

To force anyone for any reason to undergo an unnecessary procedure is NOT good healthcare ! .
