A day at work for a nurse can be stressful. We go through death, sickness, administrative changes, and so much more. What do you do to cheer yourself up after a bad day at work?

I try to only work two days at a time so if I have a bad night I know I only have to get thru one more! But surprisingly many times the next night turns out fine.

Otherwise after a bad night I like to take a hot bubble bath and sleep my cares away! Then when I wake up I might indulge in some retail therapy!

If I work the next day, I come here, lol. I also go to bed at a decent hour.

If I don't work the next day I take a nice hot bath, maybe a glass of wine. My days off consist of family, garden and day trips. :)

You call out for a shift just because you had a bad day? That is interesting. No one can define a bad day but you. I would encourage you to take the "bad day" as an opportunity to learn about how to deal with stresses. Mentally review the day. what made it a bad day and how could things have been different? How could you have responded differently to the stressors that made it a bad day. the longer that you are a nurse, the definitioin of what constitutes a bad day will change.

If the day was made stressful just by the multitude of small annoyances/inconveniences (and not a major bad event), I usually just take a walk with my dog (I have to do that anyway, because she needs to pee bad by the time I get home) and let the day go while she takes in the sniffs and antagonizes the neighborhood pooches whose owners aren't courteous enough to take them for a walk at one o'clock in the morning (I usually try to steer away from those houses, but sometimes, if it's been a bad enough day or I'm just plain exhausted, I forget. Oops). The exercise and exhaustion are usually enough to shake me loose from any lingering bad feelings. I avoid alcohol just because it's a downer and usually makes a person feel worse, ultimately. A glass of milk, on the other hand, goes over well to easing one off to sleep.

First.....sweet, sweet SLEEP......then hitting the gym hard in the morning!!!

I take a long ride on my motorcycle. :yeah:

Just spend time with loved ones. It makes you appreciate what you have and takes your mind off of any stresses and negativity.

Go to the driving range, one golf ball for every little thing that went wrong that day! Sometimes it takes more than one bucket of balls to work the frustration out!
