I seem to have "I'm a nurse" stamped on my forehead. I will have complete strangers approach me and tell me their stories, pass out in line in front of me and choke on their food.

I do have a bad habit of looking at peoples veins and thinking ...those are some nice pipes.

I find myself sometimes in line at the grocery store, staring at someone's veins and thinking I could put a 16 in that without a touniquet.

About a year ago, I was at a Star Bucks studing for my RNC certification exam. The toaster oven alarm sounds just like our difibrillator powering on, and I almost bounded over the counter to get to the "code" I was instinctively responding to. I think I may have scared the people next to me with my sudden leaping to action.

I am picturing this perfectly :) thanks for the giggle!

The other day I was at shoprite, over the loud speaker they call "help on nine" My heart started racing as I frantically looked around. I had to tell myself I am not at work and this is not an emergency. The last time someone called for help a patient decanulated herself and was turning a wonderful shade of purple!

What is RNC? All I can think of is Republican National Convention! lol

RNC is a cerification from the National Certification Corporation. They offer certifications in different specialties (Inpatient Obstetric Nursing, Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing, Low Risk Neonatal Nursing, and Maternal Newborn nursing). Mine is a RNC-NIC- so it is a certification for NICU nursing. My hospital requires all of its nurses to get a cert in their specialty within 2 years of working here. When ever I hear any alarms outside of work I think I need to respond immediately.

I used to work as a staff/charge RN at a long term/rehab facility on the noc shift. I was picking up an item I had ordered from Walmart and from the back I heard an alarm that sounded just like the bed alarms that the facility used. I instantly got the same feeling in my chest I got while on the job. It got worse because it took at least 5 minutes for the alarm to be silenced.

We had a local grocery store that called a code 26 for a price check over the intercom. My friends used to laugh when I went into high alert at the sound of a price check. I hear the word code, and the adrenaline starts pumping.

I do the absolute opposite! Terrible, I know.
