Yes I will post their response! I have been dealing with the NMC since August 2012, and believe you me I know exactly how they work and it is very poorly organised. But there is nothing we can do- we just have to give them what they want.

It took me from August 2012 to March 2014 to get my decision letter. After speaking to many facilities re ONP, there was no way I was working without pay for 3 months to get my pin, so when this new testing came up I decided to do it this way to get the pin.

They are really shooting themselves in the foot, they need good nurses over there (I already worked there as a 'HCA' for 2 years but couldn't remain with a visa because the registration process was taking too long for my employer).

Like nixonk86 I believe I would've got the bulk of it correct. But the questions are just completely ambiguous. I only got 2 drug calculations also which I found very surprising, and ironic given they asked a lot of 'airy-fairy' empathy related questions.

I feel like we've been set up to fail, no doubt what will happen is that no-one will be able to pass, so that in the next 6 months they will need to have yet again another review of the system.

I also have a great ability to remember information, as soon as I came out of Pearson I wrote down many of the questions and looked them up- the answers were definitely not worded to a decent standard.

Ugh. Dang. Its all making me nervous. There are many nurses here in the Philippines that will take the exam.

Does anyone know if it's the same questions each time or whether there is a pool of questions and you randomly get 120? If it's a pool then maybe it's possible to not get the ambiguous questions but if it's not I'm still unsure what answers they want

There are already lots and lots of good nurses working and living in the UK. In the same way there are lots of good nurses living and working in other countries.

You need to meet requirements and if not happy then please look else where. I am from the UK and moved to Canada and like many IEN I had to meet requirements and the process in Canada is just as long as the UK and most for IENs applying to Canada have to do further courses costing $$$$ and the cost to register as a nurse in Canada costs a lot more than it does in the UK. The application process has recently changed and having helped IEN in the UK adapt it was long overdue so there are bound to be teething issues

Silverdragon I don't think that gen88 was saying that UK nurses aren't good, I think gen88 was referring to the shortage or RNs in the UK. Nobody wants incompetent nurses but the issue we have is that the test doesn't weed out incompetence it is just poorly written, yes we all expected some teething problems but when it costs 130 pounds each time you sit the test you would like the questions and answers provided to be accurate. Worse than the money is that if you fail it a second time you have to wait 6 months before you can resit. For those of us who have been stuck in limbo for over a year with these changes it is extremely frustrating.

I feel you have taken my post too literally. Of course there are brilliant nurses- but there are also many sub-par nurses. What they may like to consider is the fact that any Euro zone nurse does not have to undergo the same rigorous process as us IEN's do. I have witnessed first-hand dangerous practice by nurses from nearby European countries. It's just a shame these concerns are not elevated to a level where change can be made (patient safety is the key).

As nixonk86 agrees, yes of course there will be teething problems. However due to costs involved as well as the fact we may only have 2 initial attempts...I think it is inappropriate to make the test 'live' when sufficient information, resources are not yet available.

I don't expect them to tell me what to study. I've long left high school. But I expect a certain level of professionalism which I haven't received.

Questions I am still waiting on an answer to are (2 weeks later- yesterday via phone I was told I would receive answers today- nothing yet.) where and when are the dates for the OSCE? Does everyone have the same amount of 'essential' questions? How big is the pool of questions? What is the current pass-rate? What nursing skills are you expecting IENs to be trained in, as a minimum? For eg., I had a question on NG tube insertion which was not part of my university's teaching at the time.

Personally I think these are fair and just questions and should be answered. We really want to work in the UK- and work hard- at the end of the day it's just SO frustrating when there are these blocks that could easily be rectified :)

I'm sorry I may have scared you! But at least you are more prepared than I ever was going in :)

So relieved to hear others are having the same issues passing, it is shocking to read that you have failed a nursing "competency" test when you have been nursing a few years. It is so frustrating to realise that there is an error in the way they have worded questions, meaning no matter how much you study something you cannot "correctly" answer the question.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.
