I don't recall seeing a thread like this and it was something someone asked me so I thought I would throw it out there. What are your favorite types of patients?? Me, I love when I have Pre-Teen and Teen boys. I work well... Read More

i totally adore obstinate, irritable, elderly ladies...
you know, the ones that are tiny, frail looking and will throw a book at you as you walk out the room.
i just can't get enough of them...i think it's because i see that in my future, and i wonder who's going to try and manage me?
now there's a nightmare coming, for whoever.

i had this 85yo female copd pt- late stage.
her skin was leathered and wrinkly- she looked like she was 100...
    and weighed 60 lbs, tops...
    and still smoked.
one time she was screaming at an aide, being her usual incorrigible self, when her favorite dr. walked in.
she instantly changed from monster to coy and flirtatious, literally batting her eyes, chin tucked and smiling...almost like she was posing.
this woman had to be one of my all time favorites...
she was feisty in life, and feisty in death.
not fearful nor meek, but comparable to giving death, the finger followed by a raspy f.u.

    This is a great thread.

I like the ornery ones. I see them as a challenge to make them laugh. Sometimes I am able to....most times I just get kicked out of their room or 'fired'.

Babies, toddlers, and up to elementary school-aged kids. I like kids that are still kids, not the ones who are transitioning to adulthood (or think they are!). That may change once my own kid is older (he's 9 now).

One of the best things about my current job is that I get to work with my favorite age group -- I work with newborns to 5 year olds (or sometimes a little older) in the foster care system.

My favorite type of pts are the ones who participate in their care and are thankful for the help they are given.

I admitted a little old lady (used to be LOL before that meant laughing ) who had been bit by a rattlesnake- old rancher lady, tough. She'd waited several days while her leg got worse, before coming to the ED, and admitted for wound care/antibiotics. When I was doing the admission, I asked her what happened to the snake....she had hobbled back to her house, got a shotgun, and blown the snake into a million pieces- gotta love that
This is one of the neatest things I've ever heard!!! It sound like a neighbor of ours whose hand was crushed by a trailer hitch. He just smiled and asked for a jack.

I like adolescent girls..people often stereotype them and disregard their feelings and problems as "drama." An honest, open talk about what is going on in their life and how they feel about themselves can go far. I also try to implement some self esteem and body image building exercises. I find that most are special souls trapped under negative self talk and unrealistic societal expectations.

I also love cantankerous little old ladies. I had one, a feisty 4'9 Puerto Rican lady. She loved men, and any male PT that came to treat her got propositioned to "go back to her place" and also had their butts grabbed. One time I was helping her back to bed and the conversation went like this:

LOL: "Oh mamita, would you please open the door to my room?" (in the sweetest voice you could imagine)
Me: "Of course" (opening the door) "Anything else?"
LOL: "Now please get the h*ll out!!" (complete with launching a cup of ice cream at my head)

I admit it, I'm a softy for military vets. Sometimes we find out they were on the same base my dad was at the same time, or we talk about Dinglewood Pharmacy's scrambled dogs and Lum's (Ft. Benning), the good A&W root beer in Fayetteville (Ft. Bragg), all the places we'd go like the Streamliner. I was never in the Army, but I'm still a proud "Army brat" and Army looks after Army. I always "yes, sir" and "no, sir" them, and they "ma'am" me to death.

Go First Cav, Go First Team! Love ya, guys!
