Has anyone else completely lost all sense of professionalism before? It had been a long emotional day. Took my very young pt for a brain flow study that had very poor results. Assisted the neurologist in a cold caloric (sp?) study and I had been speaking with the OPO rep all day. The neuro guy on the floor is always so friendly and a great source of knowledge. I asked him about Dolls Eyes because I have always got conflicting information on this. While explaining this he mentions other ways to assess brain function and death. He goes through a long list of ways and then out of his mouth pops the words "anal wink." I felt bad and embarrassed but after a few seconds I lost it and burst out laughing. Totally inappropriate I know, but I couldn't hold it in. I felt better that after I did a few others did too. Some one else please tell me you have inappropriately laughed with the doctor. FYI family was no where even in the hospital. Just the doc and a few nurses. Oh and once we were laughing I guess it was contagious because he did too :)

There is a very cute intern at our hospital who is a nice guy in addition to his looks.

One day he came to try to put an EJ in a patient and left his coat out at the nurses' station. My friend and I decided to mess with him and filled his pockets with cotton balls and those big peri pads for maternity patients.

Every time he walks by, if he hasn't seen me in a while, he flashes a grin and tells me he needs a tampon. And we completely lose it.

I guess it doesn't matter that he's cute. I just felt like putting that in there, haha.

We have a couple of docs at our hospital that we can totally joke with and have fun! It makes working much more fun and relaxes the atmosphere! It also makes the doctors much more approachable and easier to talk to and learn from. I wish many more doctors were like this!

I was horrified, but in a funny way, when the neurosurgeon looked at the grey matter oozing out of my patient's head and said, "There go the piano lessons." It's still the first thing I think of when I see an open head and makes me smile in a bad situation.

Just come hang out in the OR some time. My team happens to love practical jokes- sending people for non-existant instruments (Otis elevator/fallopian tube), maneuvers that have been named after someone (unintentionally spraying someone with a pressure bag that came unspiked is "pulling a Linda"), that sort of thing.

We once had a chocolate cake on the table in the back room. A neurosurg attending came by and stuck a sign in it that read "guaiac positive."

When I worked inpatient Peds, we used to say that when they had seizures.

Inappropriate humor (in the right place: never around patients or families) has the wonderful effect of helping us process the horror we see in our jobs. It lets us blow off steam.

It lets us laugh when else we'd cry. :(
