What exactly is a code white and what system do you work for that doesn't do customer satisfaction scores?? Customer satisfaction is currently being rammed down our throats and I think is actually more important than patient care right now. I'd love to work for a company that doesn't do satisfaction scores!!

We have a couple of docs at our hospital that we can totally joke with and have fun! It makes working much more fun and relaxes the atmosphere! It also makes the doctors much more approachable and easier to talk to and learn from. I wish many more doctors were like this!

I'm nearing the end of my orientation and I want to get my preceptor a really nice gift. She has been extremely invaluable and very patient with me and has truly been a mentor and has shown me the kind of nurse that I want to be. We've also become quite good friends and I want to give her something to show her how much I appreciate everything that she's done for me. Thanks for any and all suggestions!!

I could have written this post myself. I graduated in June, passed my NCLEX in July and have been applying for jobs daily since then. I think I have at least 200-300 applications out there by now. I've applied to places an hour and a half away. I get up every day and apply for jobs. I make phone calls, I have gone in person to apply, I've mailed applications on fancy resume paper... not one single interview. It's so frustrating!! I'm trying to stay positive but it's so hard!!

I worked as a medical transcriptionist for ten years but my job ended at the end of 2007 because my main client went paperless. With more and more companies doing this, I decided to go back to school for nursing. I did make really good money and was able to stay at home with my kids while they were little, but it's not really a good field to get into right now because of everyone going paperless. And it can be a hard field to break into. I sort of lucked out into finding my main client who kept me very busy for the better part of ten years. Good luck to you!!

I'm one of the many new grads out there searching for a job. I graduated in June, passed the NCLEX (RN) in July and now desperately searching for a job. My question is this: When applying for jobs and it clearly states "Experience Required" but doesn't blatantly say "No New Grads" (as I've seen on some jobs), do I apply or not? Part of me thinks, it can't hurt, while the other part of me thinks that the human resources dept might think that if I can't follow directions, they may not hire me for another job that I've applied for. One more question... when online applications have a listing of different areas and want to know how much experience you have in each area, are clinicals considered experience? Logic tells me no, but I thought I'd ask anyhow. I went through a dual enrollment program that was an 18 month LPN program and then we went right into an RN program so I've basically done clinicals for 2.5 years continuously with the majority of them done in one hospital. You can probably look on your state's board of nursing website and find the statistics for the pass/fail rate at the school you're questioning. You'll find that the costs of schools vary quite a bit from city to city, state to state. My program is going to be around $16,500.00 and that includes quite a few pre-reqs for the LPN to RN transition program. It all depends on what works for you. If it were me, I would chose the school five minutes from my house but that's because I have three kids and a husband and don't want t spend time communiting. Also you might want to think about gas prices and the money you'll spend on gas for the extra commute. Try to figure out how many miles extra the cheaper schools are from you and calculate how much extra money that will cost in gas. Good luck!

Nope, not a private school, actually a vocational school and actually we're getting a pretty good deal with the dual program because all of our pre-requisites from the community college are included in our tuition (which is the same tuition that the strictly LPN students pay). I know $1,000 is a lot for a laptop but it's required so not much I can do about it. This same vocational school is a voc school for high school too and they give all the high school students laptops so it's pretty standard for this school for everyone to have laptops (though I don't think the high schoolers have to pay for theirs - hope not cause my son is going there and I don't want to fork out another thousand dollars but I'll find that out tomorrow at his meeting).

The pre-req's that we were required to take for the LPN/RN program are A&P, computer basics, Nutrition, Psychology and English. My voc school (Ohio Hi Point) has just started this dual program so it's very new. The LPN portion is 18 months and while doing the LPN classes, we're concurrently taking all the other pre-req's for the RN program. After the LPN portion, we'll take a LPN to RN transition class in the summer (of 2010) and then have three semesters of the RN nursing classes. So it's a total of 2.5 years. The main reason for this program is that the RN portion through the community college is waiving the waitlist for the RN classes & clinicals and the cc, which is located about an hour away, is coming to a small town near me for the classes & the clinicals will be at a local hospital. I start in January (though I'm taking Nutrition, English & Psychology this fall) and can't wait to get started.
