Hi guys! It is now my second month being jobless after I was fired by my first job. It is depressing because I have been in several interviews already and they did not call me back. :cry: I envy my cousins who graduated NCP and I am pretty sure she will have a job soon cause she is a PRODUCT of a local hospital here in Virginia while me struggling to get in to any hospital or LTC.

Recently, my dad was fired also so we are so poor, hopeless and depressed. NOBODY IS HELPING US!! Like me, my dad had several interviews and did not receive any calls afterwards. I am desperate guys and crying every night. I pity my dad and I cry every time I see him sad and regretful. Guys, help me. If anyone here is in Virginia Beach, Virginia please give me ideas what should I do. I cannot think anymore. I TRIED EVERYTHING. I REALLY TIRED. I went to HR Department already and talked anyone without luck. Do you have similar experience with me? Tell me your story.

What were you fired for?

I was fired because of med error. I gave the medicine at the wrong time. The patient is stable without adverse reactions. It is self reported error and first offense.

Did you try Chesapeake? If fired from Sentara , you will never get hired at another Sentara. Also try Bon Secours or Riverside. There are a ton of home health agencies as well

Can you get an in between job at a store to get some income? Keep looking of course.

I worked in Bayside Health and Rehab Center.. so I cannot get in any MFA Facilities anymore but they said to me that once I have experience, I can apply and work there. I tried Bon Secours but no good. I always denied in Bon Secours and also in Chesapeake Regional

What about the other LTC facilities or Assisted Living facilities in Chesapeake, I don't think all of them are Sentara facilities. What about Home Health??

I will try to visit the Carrington Facility in Chesapeake this Monday and see what I can get afterwards. I doubt Home Health will hire new grad. I think they require at least 1 year experience in HH or hospice. I am freaking out fellow nurses. I m so down right now that I can do everything just to get a job offer.

Cant tell you anything about your area, as I know nothing about it.

But what I do suggest is you work on changing your attitude.

The world isnt always sunshine and rainbows, but having a "defeated", desperate, negative attitude doesnt help. Theres plenty of business books about pitching an idea that talks about the large amount of people who try to sell a product by essentially saying "buy my product because im desperate and I really need you to". Trying to get a job youre really selling yourself, so I dont think going in with that attitude will help.

Do your research, read up on how to get your resume read. STUDY for interviews, be incredibly prepared. Think of ways that you can make yourself seem more desirable than every other applicant.

I'm surprised that you got fired for one med error that had no negative outcome. I don't mean to make negative assumptions, but in my experience (nursing and otherwise) when someone is fired one small and seemingly inconsequential mistake there is usually a bigger underlying reason. Has anyone else that you know of been fired from that facility for making a single, harmless med error?

My point is, get to the bottom of why you were fired and why you are not being hired. Part of it, I'm betting, is your attitude (as someone else mentioned). You clearly have a defeated attitude and no matter how big a smile you put on it will show through on the job and in interviews. No one wants to hire someone who wouldn't hire themselves. I know I can't just say, "snap out of it" and it be that simple, but start working towards changing your frame of mind.

While you're waiting to get another nursing position, work a non-nursing job. It will not only help you financially but it will help distract you and keep you busy.

Sorry you're dealing with this, but I'll bet this situation will take you to a better place if you let it.

Hopefully, your Dad has filed for unemployment. If he has not, he should. Additionally, you both should go to the local welfare office and see about what kinds of assistance you can receive. And you also should apply for unemployment.

With that being said, go to your schools guidance department, and have conversation regarding your resume, interview skills, and the like. Sometimes it is in presentation.

Be very general regarding your past employment. "Not a good fit for the unit culture" is a good, general theme.

I would further suggest that you see about agency work specific to flu shot clinics (which is big this time of year) Skilled care, nursing homes, assisted living. And urgent care/minute clinics.

Another thought process is obtain a non-nursing job to pay the bills (ok, my dream would be to work at a department store--how fun is that!! AND most large ones have tuition reimbursement!!) and see where you can specialize, further your education with grants and scholarships, *and the tuition reimbursement* Also, you can see about becoming a CPR instructor, a CNA instructor, get back with your old college, and see what they have to offer. Even to teach adult-ed or online class about "health and wellness" would be a good thing. Senior daycares, elder services, mental health day programs are also great thoughts.

And finally, and I know I have suggested this on other posts, however, as an RN you can in SOME cases comp an EMT-B test, take the practical, and become an EMT-B. IF there's jobs in ambulance companies in your area. Local community colleges have these, (and when you go see your guidance counselor at your former college, ASK). Even if you have to take the entire course, it is weeks in nature as opposed to a year. You may be able to get a grant. There are lots of ambulance companies that hire. And should you go on to your paramedic, as also an RN, I opens up transport nursing as well.

This is a bump, not the end deal, stop spinning and start focusing. And I mean that with lots of motherly concern and caring. Yes, you may be tired, but we are all tired, so grab a cup of coffee and make a list. First on your list is to apply for unemployment and any other benefits you can. Then, appointment with your guidance counselor. Buck up, get 'er done and nothing but best wishes.
