U.S.A. North Carolina

Any people applied to CFCC for fall of 2011 and waiting for the letters? I did and am going crazy! hoping it will be end of March/early April. Point count reviews are this week.

I am in the program now (3rd semseter!) and I LOVE it!!! It's hard, and time consuming, but so worth it! The instructors are fantastic and very helpful, they all want to see you do well! Good luck to you and hopefully I'll see you in the halls come August!

Good news! I went to orientation Tuesday and got called in to fill a night seat today! :D I'm ecstatic. I'm hoping I'll be able to get a day class eventually. See you soon.

That's great, congrats!!!! :yeah:

I'm sure you'll eventually be able to move to days! Enjoy your summer, you won't have much of one next year ;), but it will be worth it!

Hi, olliesmommy1005! Hope you're doing well. I was wondering if using an itouch in class or at clinicals is permitted. Before I buy the drug guides and a few of the other reference books, I was thinking about getting the apps on my itouch instead. Let me know your thoughts.

Hi! I have an Iphone and I use it in class to record lecture, which helps tremendously! I listen to the lecture in the car, mowing the lawn, and I go to sleep listening to it before a test!

Also I have the Micromedex app (drug guide) and I have used it a couple times at clinicals. You are not supposed to be on your phone during clinical time at all, but if you explain to your instructor that you have this app on your itouch and you wanted to look something up, they usually won't have a problem with it! Just don't make yourself look like you're doing something you're not suppposed to!

Good luck!!!! :D

Hello again! Thought I'd vent about the first Unit test tonight. I did horribly. I'm really hoping this first test grade isn't any indication on how I'm going to do in this program. I keep telling myself it was just the first test. What ways did you study? I wish we would have known what module we were going to work on before classes started so that I could have gotten a head start. We jumped around modules and didn't get to cover some of them. Is this normal? Any tips you have would be great. I appreciate it a ton!

Sent you a message.......

I am also looking for study tips from someone who has made it to the 2nd year! This program is definitely sink or swim and I feel like I need to find an effective way to absorb all of the material fast! Any help would be appreciated olliesmommy!! TIA

It's a tough program but it will be so worth it! It is hard to get into a "groove" of studying and everyone is different, but the best I can tell you is what works for me!

I record all the lectures on my phone (or use a digital recorder, whatever works, my phone is just always with me!) I listen to it as much as I can (as I said before, mowing the lawn, in the car, going to sleep) that way I'm kind of engrossed with the topic. Read what you can, with the mass amount that we have, it is hard! First year you are getting that knowledge base, so read for content as well as with in the back of your mind having the question "what would I do as a nurse?" I bring a laptop to class and add my own notes into the notes that the instructors provide. During my study time before a test, I print out and review my notes and I will even search YouTube for videos that are pertinent to that unit.

Sorry if that's kind of rambing, but I just was trying to spit out what I can think of!!

A great book that you may want to look into if you're a visual learner is the Memory Notebooks of Nursing, it's all pictures with some really good broken-down study hints

Hope that helps!!!

Thanks olliesmommy! That info is really helpful! It is a very difficult program and I think it is tough to get used to at first, especially after taking the summer off but you are right it will be so worth it in the end! I am a single mom to a 3 year old and finding the extra time to study/read is challenging. I may have to invest in a recorder though, and that book you mentioned sounds very helpful.

Another question I have.. What can I expect at clinical rotation? Do you have any tips that can help me be better prepared? I am so nervous and don't know what to expect! Many in the program have experience in the health care field and also in the hospital but I do not and am wondering what exactly to expect, how to prepare, how to stay on top of things, etc.. Any advice you can offer would be MUCH appreciated! Thank you!! :)

It's difficult being a mom and having to balance schoolwork. I have two kiddos myself (4 and 2) and I work part time (luckily I can read and study at work!). :sstrs:

Ohhh....clinicals, I LOVE clinicals!!! It is super overwhelming at first and the only healthcare experience I had was as an EMT (which doesn't prepare you for the in hospital stuff). Do some searching in here and there are a lot of threads with tons of tips/tools. The paperwork is going to seem really daunting, but it gets better, trust me! Try to familiarize yourself with some of the labs (RBC, WBC, H&H, electrolytes, etc) it won't help you the first week, but it will throughout! Take all you can from the lab days you have now and try to fully understand the procedures, because you'll be performing them in the field and in front of an instructor ;). It's nerve wracking, but you will get the hang of it!

Hi olliesmommy,

What was your point count if you don't mind me asking?
