I didn't start hearing about the job shortage until I was already accepted into a nursing program... I had already invested quite a bit into my pre-reqs and I wasn't going to back out.

But had I known then what I know now, I might have chosen a different path. Don't get me wrong, I do like nursing but I'd like to be able to actually work as a nurse.

Because I know I want to eventually be a Neonatal NP. I am not going into nursing for the money but because I know that it is my life's calling and I hope to make a difference in someone's life.

I know the economy is bad now and there is a nursing shortage. Nursing is something I really want to do. I will be getting into a nursing program hopefully this September, and if not I will try again for next semester. If I got in this September it would be two years of schooling...plus by the time I take the NCLEX maybe another few months. In 2-3 years there definately could be a change in the economy and a change in the nursing shortage

This is very optimistic and reassuring ! I really don't see me doing anything else.I really hope that this change happens soon because Nurses are needed and there are new graduates who actually want to work right after graduation.

Im not talking about the salary,im talking about the scarcity of job positions these days for new graduates.Honestly,I think almost everyone go into Nursing for the money aswell.Ofcourse no one will ever write that on their essay lol. Everyone who goes into the health field love helping people and making a difference, but we also want a comfortable life and a career with job security. We want a career where we feel important.Im sure that going into Nursing because it's a calling is not the only reason why people pursue it.I , personally,am pursuing it because I love the health field,it's flexible, I want to be productive,I want to feel needed and I want to help cure people or help them with whatever health problems they have.I don't want a career where I can call sick whenever I want.Nursing is the ideal career for me.

A wise person told me not to enter a field for the job security because there is no such thing. In the 80s, high school and college students were encouraged to go into IT because that's where the job security was. Well those jobs were subsequently outsourced so unless they wanted to move to India for

The economy is cyclical..I'm hoping things will turn aruond by 2011. If not I'll flip burgers or fold clothes until it does. That's life.

I think you just answered your own question! One in a zillion people become an accomplished musician yet there are still groups scrapping together tips on a Wednesday night after playing Journey covers during happy hour. Yes, the salary and open job market (five years ago when we signed up for this) was also appealing but when you really feel like you love something you don't let something like a challenging job market get in the way. I'm graduating in May and have just secured a position and I actually know a good amount of people that have been told there would be jobs for them on the floors they're doing their clinicals on now. So chin up everyone! Just keep applying and be persistent!

It is something I've always wanted to do for years, I only wish I had got on it before and did not wait. Plus I believe the tide will turn and we'll have our pick of jobs offering bonuses and incentives eventually.

If that doesn't happen by graduation, there is always the military and on top of that I don't have anything tying me down to one city, I can move pretty much anywhere for my career.

It's something that I really wanted to do. However I did look into other health professions and with this economy I don't think any kind of new grad is going to have it easy. I don't graduate for two more years so all I can do is hope that things are better by then. I've been doing pre-reqs since 2007 and I sure as heck am not going to turn and run after all that.

A lot of my pre-reqs will transfer into other professions though and I've looked into Respiratory Therapist and Physician Assistant but I'm just not really interested in those I guess.
