hey paco,

i'm in the same boat as you and decided to apply this year instead of last year. i can't believe it came this quickly! the application hasn't come out yet, right?

hi meeeshelllie! glad to see you on here. are you applying to other programs as well? i am, but certainly columbia is my #1 choice, notwithstanding the cost :eek: ...

the application is not available yet. i got an email from them a few days ago, here's part of what it said:

"thank you for your interest in columbia university school of nursing. we are currently undergoing our annual updates. during this time you will be unable to submit or access your application for the 2011-2012 academic year. we anticipate completion of these updates by august 1, 2010. all work completed on your application to date, will populate into the new application. we will notify you via e-mail once the application is live."

i was able to log into the application using my old pin but there is nothing there to fill out. i was hoping i'd get a peek at the personal statement prompt and start working on that (not that the gre studying is keeping me busy enough ) ... i think i may have copied it into word from last year, i'll have to search and see.

hey there paco,

yes, along with columbia i'm also applying to: penn, ucsf, vanderbilt, csulb, and csuf. i'm hoping to get into the women's health NP track at either of the schools. which track are you interested in? columbia is definitely one of my primary choices as well and yeah...i don't even wanna get started with the costs! :uhoh3:

okay, phew! good to know that they still haven't released it yet b/c i thought it may have been my computer or something. i also tried to use my old pin and nothing is there for me either. i should have copied and pasted last year's prompt into word, too! a head start would be really nice.

i'm studying for the GRE as well! next week is my last week for a prep course that i'm currently in. i'll be taking the exam on august 7th! how is studying going for you? when are you planning to take your test?

i'm very eager to pursue the neonatal np. even if i end up completing my degree elsewhere i still want to attend columbia's graduate neonatal np program after a couple of years as a staff nurse. the etp is appealing because it's everything i want in one place. stony brook and Drexel are two of my other bsn choices for now.

i have been studying for the gre on my own, using a kaplan workbook. so far so good. i am not planning to take the test however until sept. at the earliest. wish i had thought of taking it earlier but then again i was concentrating on finishing some prereqs last semester and i also work full-time. i have very little free time these days ... but i might as well get used to that if i am accepted into etp (or any other nursing program). i am also applying to a couple of adn programs in the event i can't secure or afford absn. it's going to be an interesting year!

Hi All -

I thought I may as well join the group here as I'm also applying to Columbia this year. I'm hoping to get into their Acute Care NP program.

For the past year, I've been a study coordinator for a cardiology research team and a medical assistant for a private practice pediatrician. I took the GRE yesterday! The test itself is super stressful, but I did okay. I'm hoping that my grades, experience, foreign language skills and goal statement will outweigh the GRE scores. I really don't want to take them again.

I'm also applying to UCSF, Johns Hopkins, and Boston College.

Hi,

I'm planning to apply this year to the ETP program as well for the pediatrics specialty. I'm pretty nervous, I'm not sure if my scores are good enough! :crying2:

I just took my GRE on July 30th and ended up bombing the verbal (got a 480) but acing the math (a 740, which I never imagined I could even get!). I'm still waiting on the writing and trying to determine whether its worth re-taking -- I don't want to risk messing up on the math! I also just don't want to take another standardized test.

I'm also applying to UIC, Yale and Boston College -- I need to find some backups though. Although my back-up might be just to teach pre-school for a year.

Hello All,

I am also interested in Columbia's ETP 2011. I have absolutely been stressing about it. I have my Bachelor's in Criminal Justice and I just finished with Micro and A&P. I was striving for a A in both but I ended up with a B :crying2: . I really needed an A because I had a period in my life when I wasn't sure about life and what I wanted to do and I majorly fumbled some classes so my Undergrad GPA is not the greatest. I am striving on doing well on the GRE and in my last couple of prereqs. I want to do the Nurse Anesthesia program. I heard it is really difficult to get into that program, but I am hoping. I haven't really looked into any other schools. I guess I should start and not put all my eggs in one basket, because I would be crushed if I didn't get in and I did prepare for something else. I am just beyod stressed right now. Well enough rambling...GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!!

yes, please don't do that - don't put all your eggs in one basket in applying to nursing schools. i did that last year, i only applied to one school (stony brook) and was waitlisted ... ultimately the class was filled and i was never taken off the list. now i have to reapply all over again this year when i probably could have gone elsewhere. do select a couple of other schools as backups so at least you will have options. i am doing that this year.

however, on another note related to columbia, i have decided not to apply to the etp. i just don't have time to dedicate to the gre right now and am applying to other schools that don't require it and that are a tad less $$$ for a bsn. my :redbeathe is with columbia and i know it's my only choice for grad school, so my app will have to wait until then. good luck to all of you who are applying!! :up:

I know Hunter College does not require GRE's and is MUCH cheaper... but how much of a weight/pull compared to Columbia University does it have when applying for jobs?

i am out of state right now, so hunter would not only not be cheap for me but it would be impossible for me to get in as well. i have heard that one has to be in residence @ any cuny school for at least one semester before applying to their bsn nursing program (this particularly applies to hunter so i have heard as an example). i don't think the columbia name has any more pull in terms of jobs than any other nursing school (unlike law schools, where the columbia name trumps many lesser ranked schools like a foot on a roach). my desire to attend columbia stems from childhood and having grown up near the school, knowing their history, prestige and admiring the type of people that have graduated from there that i know. behooves me sometimes why i never considered going there in the first place as an undergrad, but i think $$ was an issue back then for sure certainly not grades or anything like that.

Is anyone else stressing over the personal statement and resume or CV? I just don't know how to articulate why I want to be a Nurse and go to Columbia. I mean I haven't got a clue what to write or even how to begin. I am sure I am over thinking it, but I know this is a very important section. Also does anyone know about the Organic Chemistry and Physics requirements to do the CRNA program? All it said was that I had to have two Chemistry's one of which needs to be Organic. So Organic is broken down into two parts and so is Physics do I have to take both parts. I know this sounds stupid but I was just wondering.
