Columbia University ETP 2011

Published

Thought it'd be a good idea to start a thread for prospective applicants to Columbia's ETP program starting Summer 2011. I was going to apply last year but passed on it in favor of working for another year.

Applications are due November 15, 2010! Right around the corner ...

Anyone else preparing for this also? :clown:

Hi everyone...thanks for starting this thread. I looked at Columbia a bit too late last year and just missed the deadline so I'm really on the stick this year--just mailed my transcripts yesterday and had the GRE scores sent a few weeks ago. Am only applying to Columbia and Penn so keeping my fingers crossed one of the two pans out for me. A little scared about the $$$ for the programs--especially the cost of living in NYC, but am going for it...adult acute care. Good luck everyone!

ETP- Columbia Nurse Anesthesia

Hello Everyone,

Is anyone here applying for the ETP- Anesthesia program ? Where else areyou guys applying? I only found Columbia and UPenn with this kind of program.

Hope to hear from prospective applicatants soon. :)

I think that Thomas Jefferson University's FACT program offers the CRNA program. The FACT program the 12-month BSN part and then the MSN.

However, don't take my word for it.

I am looking to apply for the ETP Anesthesia program. I am worried because apparently this program is very competitive. I have a few more prereqs to take but will be finished in the Spring. Which reminds me does anyone know where you can take Organic Chemistry and Physics online in an accelerated environment?

I am also applying. I just decided to today. I really wanted to do o the Neonatal NP route however the site states that they are no longer accepting applications for that specialty. So I am going to apply for the PNP instead. I am also applying to Pace, Concordia College (NY), NYU, Hunter, College of New Rochelle, Drexel, and UPENN. I have a 3.9 GPA at my present college. My prereq GPA is around a 3.5-3.7 range.

I live in Westchester for free with family so it would be ideal for me to get into a program in NY. I am not taking my GRE till Oct.

Hopefully we will all have good news come Feb.

Hi everyone!!!

I'm applying this year to adult NP possibly. My prerequisite GPA is around 3.4, which I think is not good enough.

I will take GRE test on September.

Hopefully everyone will receive good news !!!

Hey Everyone! I am also applying this November for the Family Nurse Practitioner route with a concentration in oncology. I am super nervous about applying because my undergrad GPA is a 3.2, but my pre-reqs are a 4.0. I hope they take into consideration our last 60 semesters units (where i have a 3.7) in school because I messed up as a stupid freshmen. I also have worked at UCSD Oncology center for 2 years so hopefully that will help me out, but still super excited and nervous. Does anyone know how many applicants on average they get? I know they take around 150-180, but wasn't sure about how many apply? I am going to take the GRE's in october so I am nervous about that too because standardized test are no fun! Its going to be a stressful few months before sending out the application.

I'm a current ETP student and remembering how important this thread was to me around this time last year, I'll try to toss out a few bits of information that I really wanted to know as an applicant.

At the information session I attended last year (so this is 2 yrs out of date) they said the accepted classes avg GPA was 3.59 and the GRE avg was around 1100/4.5, and basically to shoot for 50th percentile or above. I don't know the stats for my class, I don't think they ever specifically told us. I BELIEVE they told us there were 700-900 applicants for our year, but please don't quote me on it :)

Beyond that I'd say they did an excellent job looking at applicants as a whole and not just based on a couple of numbers. If I were applying again..I'd probably worry the most about the personal statement and getting recommendations from people who can genuinely speak to my character vs. retaking the GRE's to hit the average, or something along those lines. Professors have brought up things with me I didn't even remember I put in my personal statement, so they're definitely reading them!

Also -- I'm in the anesthesia track. If it helps I can say that there are nine of us this year, and that not a single one of us thought we had much chance of actually getting in -- yet we're all here, so if it's what interests you don't be discouraged!

Finally I'll just say I'm very happy with the program, the quality of the professors, etc, to date and have no regrets about choosing Columbia, outside of when the bill is due each semester :)

Best of luck to you all!

tamara152 : i'm having a lot of trouble starting the writing process as well!! but then again, i did recently make the final decision this year to pursue nursing so i don't have as much medical-related background as most people. the part i'm having the most trouble with is finding people who have the time to write me a letter of recommendation! before i thought i had a few people to write it but just last month two of them left their positions and haven't replied to my emails. =[

if i have little to no volunteer experience at a hospital (i'm currently just a office assistant/receptionist for an acupuncturist) would this severely hurt my chances?

amalay,

i would hang in there with the references. i found two so far, i asked my manager and i also asked one of my teachers from last semester. i lack experience in the medical field as well. i mean i got my degree in criminal justice and i work in hospitality. i volunteered one summer with the american red cross and i just applied at my local hospital to start volunteer work there. i wouldn't think not having experience would eliminate you from the program. right now i am focusing on getting a's in my pre reqs which i already messed up on because i got a b in micro but a b is not so bad and i am focusing on doing well on my gre's which i must say the test prep is kicking my butt. i can't remember how to solve word problems or percentages and i am just miserable right now. i am also going to work hard on writing a really good personal statement, if only i could find the words. but all i can do is put my best foot forward and i would suggest the same to you. i mean all you can give is your best so make sure you are giving it all you got. i mean the worst that could happen is they say no and if that happens you just try again. i hope this helps. and the best of luck to you

Well said, Tamara. I agree.

I don't believe that there is one perfect package for these programs. We all come from different background and thus all have different strengths. We just need to do a good job of highlighting those in the application. I'm really trying not to focus on what I don't have, but instead try to focus on what I *do* have going for me. That can be difficult when I hear some of the amazing stories of my fellow applicants!

I've written the first draft of my goal statement! Yay! I'm really trying to not let my procrastinating tendencies take over...

Where else is everyone applying?

Good luck to everyone here!

Thank you cartwheel,

I am terrible procrastinator myself so I have not started my personal statement yet, but I have been thinking of ideas. Good job on getting your rough draft completed and Good luck to you
