Are any New Grads having a hard time finding jobs?

    Hi, I am a new RN with my ADN. I currently work in a Hospital here in NYC and has been for 3 years! I was interviewed with them on the 2nd of April 2010 and still have not been upgraded from Tech to RN. I was told on my interview that the upgrade will take 3-6 months i am closing in on my 6th month of waiting. Is anyone else in similar situation?

    I am in a sort of similar situation as I am a new ADN grad and haven't been able to get any interviews at all. Wish I had a tech position to pay my rent. Thinking of applying for cna/pca/lpn jobs...

    i find this is the case with a lot of hospitals... tech, cna, lpn graduated with adn months ago and still waiting for open positions for upgrade. quite a few of the nurse recruiters i have spoken to say this is another facet to qhy it is hard for outside new grad adns to get hired into hospitals

    Here in Mass, extremely difficult for RN's (especially new grads) to find a job. One graduating class at the local college, not one RN found a job. Large lay-offs, cut backs are going on at hospitals here in Mass. There is NOT a nursing shortage in Mass. There are too many nursing schools. You have to remember that colleges, universities are businesses also and they want students. But, unfortunately no jobs to accommadate the massive graduating RN's each year. Another thing is that doctor's offices, clinics, etc. are now hire RP's (Responsible Persons) to do a nurses job with far less cost and only a number of weeks training. I am disheartened as a professional RN who has worked, studied, trained very hard to find that the nursing profession has not protected the profession as other professions have. ( example PT, OT, Speech pathologist, dental hygienists) They have passed laws prohibiting people off the street with a few weeks of training to do their job.

    Another reason for this type of hiring outside of the profession is that Nursing procedures are not billed. Nurses do not generate money for their employers as PT,OT, SPEECH, and Dental Hygiene do. Consequently, employers look at nurses as COSTING money. All the things that nurses do throughout their shift and not one thing is billed. You can't even walk into a dental hygienist's room and not get charged a fee.... money for employer and the employer's LOVE them as they see that hygienists are valuable to them. Again, I am disheartened with the profession and the nursing associations that could of prevented this catastrophe. I apologize if I have offended some, but hopefully it is an eye opener. I do have a job, but see this type of replacement everywhere here in this state.

    Hello all,
    I am happy to say that I was promoted t RN on Nov 1st. Monday I start my orientation on a Med/Surg Floor. Thank you lord. Please don't give up. If you can afford it take some certification courses like ACLS etc. Be ready for your interview. Keep on reviewing your materials from school from time to time. I have been at this hospital for 3 1/2 years as a CNA and I was originally promoted to a Psych Nurse but I sopke up and some of my previous ADNs and educators did as well and I was transfered to Medicine which is where I want to be. Even tho I was interviewed for the Psych position I was interviewed again by med/surg's ADN and she asked me alot of clinical stuff eg nursing intervention of pts with CHF, HTN, DM meds side effects assessments etc. which I would not have been able to answer accurately if I was not studying. Later I found out that she worked in the ER for many years and was really up on clinicals. She said to me that she is not hiring me for the years I have spent in that facility but because I am clinically component and proceeded to show me a folder of ten or so other applicants that she also interviewed for the same position that could not answer her clinical questions. Please don't give up I know it's hard. Keep reading and take anything you can get for now that is health related. I worked as a Psych Tech in psych ER for 7 months whilst waiting for my upgrade.

I recently graduated from a RN to BSN prog last month I killed myself trying to finish it fast thinking that would improve my chances as well as taking an ACLS course and no it hasn't. I'm also currently working 24 hrs/wk at a nursing home and am only greatly that I am working. I would prefer dialysis, psych, L&D, NICU, or Post Partum..it sucks all the new grads are gonna have to be LTC or paper work RNs..I feel sorry for the patients in the hospital onece some of these nurses retire because us new grad may just lose some of these skills

    I am so worried about losing my skills too but paying for the certifications is soooo expensive. I keep reading my med surg and pharmacology just so i can stay mentally on top of things until i do find work.
