WHY do I keep getting Near Passing??

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

This is soooo annoying!! Failed the damn NCLEX again, with Near passing in ALL content except Physio Adaptation in which i got Above passing. This time the test went all the way to question 195! I am also surprise that I diddnt get above passing in infection control and Psycosocial since I feel like I knew almost all those topics on the NCLEX and I got high grades on the Kaplan!!! *** am I doing wrong??

And why does Kaplan emphasize on decision tree when 90% of NCLEX questions is based on content anyways? I feel like the decision tree didnt apply to most questions, and it was either yo knew it or you dont. I had some Diabetes admin questions(NOT subQ) based on the automatic administration that people can attach to their belly..how the hell could I know that considering they were never mentioned in review course, never came across them in practice questions and were never mentioned in school!! The common things we need to know about DM didnt even come out, instead I am given some random info that most people never heard of.

Ive tried Kaplan, going over EVERY question and video content, did questions on each Saunders chapter, went over PDA, the 35 pg study guide, 95 pg study guide (waste of my money),random questions online and yet I keep getting NEAR PASSING!!:angrybird10: How can this be? usually when I study HARD for an exam, I PASS it or atleast get some questions similar to what I studied! This is so depressing and frustration, do they enjoy sucking up peoples money every single time they re-register for the exam?(which is another reason they raised the passing bar..)

Im tired of throwing money away to these NCLEX people. How do some people barely study anything and pass, but Im still in this sh!t hole? What happened to studying hard and passing? Lord knows Ive busted my ass threw nursing school and preparing for this exam! What happened to schools preparing you to take and pass board exams instead of forcing people to take review courses just bcause the NCLEX is tested differently from how it is done in School....so much for prayer and hard work. Anyone have some additional advice? PLEASE HELP!!

In my opinion it is a money mill. I would prefer that I get all 265 questions and then be scored. I find it hard to believe that beyond a shadow of a doubt the computer knows I have failed in 80/90 questions. I just fell cheated. Like you have stated, people have taken the exam and winged it and passed. I have taken 2 reviews, and have done countless questions and can't pass it to save my life. I Know things happen when the good lord above decides they will, but it is frustrating.

How do you see it as a money mill. 85% of first time US educated testers pass the first time? It would a money mill if 85% of the people failed the 1st time.

To the OP, content is lower level/below pass level questions. The creators of the NCLEX are under the impression that anyone who passed nursing school (LPN or RN) has a good grasp of content. They assume you know the information, they want to know if you know what to do with that info. Think of it this way...ALL nursing schools teach Cardiac. We all learn the pathway of the blood through the heart (whether you learned it in A&P or in one of your nursing classes). My daughter learned it (at a more basic level) in her 6th grade bio class. So she knows the content too. ok, now, do you know what happens when it doesn't flow the way it should, what s/s to watch for, commone issues that arise, meds to treat etc? Do you know what to watch for and what to do if it isn't going the way it is supposed to?

That is what NCLEX is looking for. They aren't looking to see if you knw the content backward and forward, they believe you should know it, they want to know you know what to do with that info. As LadyFree said, you need to know what they are asking. The question may seem like an OB question but when you look at the stem, they may be asking a teaching question or a safety thing, that could really apply to any area (OB, peds, psych, etc). If they are asking you what would you educate the patient on, do NOT pick a nursing intervention.

First, I have to thank you because you answered my question even though you didn't saw it. I understand it is so hard and you spent so many time on study. I saw your comments and topic that you post. I agree with you. I do not have any trick. But I hope you good luck and don't give up. You're so close. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Thank you very much Wen. i really appreciate it. Happy holidays to you to!! :)

i am in same boat . failed twice with 75 and 123 questions. I am still below in pharma basic care n health promo same status in two exam. near in all other except psychosocial .feel frustated. need to pass the exam by hook n cook.i have kplan hurst PDA good thinking .saunders too. dnt knw how can i go above frm below in near categories.

The issue may not necessarily the source of the review, but how one approaches the NCLEX itself: understanding the four concepts of becoming a competent, entry-level nurse:

1. Safe, effective care;

2.Health promotion;

3.Physiological Integrity;

4.Psychosocial integrity

Will determine WHAT the question is asking you; the question may be Respiratory related-but is it a Health Promotion or a Safety, or a Physiological or a Psychosocial one? Would you know the difference and choose the BEST answer?

Once one understands the concepts of NCLEX, they can do so successfully.

The NCSBN website has a breakdown of what questions are categorized in the four concepts; also Kaplan gives strategies on those particular concepts; I didn't use the decision tree at all; I used NCSBN for questions and used Saunders NCLEX flash cards which broke down questions specifically to the four concepts.

Great information Ladyfree28.

What do you suggest to help pass psychosocial integrity? I am currently in lvn program and taking mental health but majority of class is not passing. I did look on the ncsbn.org website and this is what is posted:

stress management

coping mechanisms

defense mechanisms, etc

now I would like to know how I can utilize this information in becoming successful in mental health course? how I study is practice questions ..LOTS but having trouble finding mental health questions online relating to the topic discussed in class. right now we are going over psychosis vs neurosis.

thanks!!!

You're not going to know everything you will be tested on. There is a good chance you will see stuff on there you have never learned. Hurst says this happens a lot. But Hurst also says "if you've never heard of it, neither has anyone else". And also take in mind that 15 of your questions are field questions.

Im amazed how people can pass at just 75 questions!! how could you do that unless you knew every single one of those content questions on nclex.

I passed in 75 questions. I didn't do Kaplan or Hurst or LaCharity or any of the other study guides out there. I did 75-100 questions a day for a couple of weeks before the test. That's it. Maybe an hour a day, some days a couple of hours. Did I know every answer on NCLEX? Heck no! I had dozens of questions that covered topics I had never heard of before! How did I pass? I knew how to approach the questions. Even though the content of questions were things I didn't know, I DID know how to decipher what they were asking. It didn't matter whether or not I knew about that particular illness or procedure; it was irrelevant. Knowing HOW to answer is the key. Good luck!
